Effects Loop

Hey Guys,

In my humble setup I've been running my EQ pedal through the effects loop of the amp head. It seems to work and sounds great.

Recently, I've been beefing up the whole rig. New set of pickups in the axe , new cables, etc...

Couple questions-

In the long run, is running the EQ through the loop mix safe in the first place?

Like I said, It seems to work fine, and I've been doing it for years...But I just don't know.

And with that, when running through the loop mix, what would be the desired cables? Instrument, or Speaker?

I've been using instrument cables. Hasn't been a problem there either. I'm guessing this is gonna be a case of "aint broke, don't fix it". In any event, very curious to hear advice and feedback.

Thanks Much!
Jonny Rock

As far as I know, its safe to use any pedal in the effects loop.

I think you will be better off to use a short length of instrument cable - the loop is in the signal path being amplified, so you want a good quality, quiet cable there.

Do you ever turn off your effects loop?

I always considered EQ to be more of an insert effect than one that would be used through the effect loop.

Danny would best be able to answer why tho.

I use an eq pedal too, but just for a different curve for acoustic. Since you're running it in the loop and not before it, you're obviously not using it boost your gain. So, as someone asked, are you turning it on and off in your set? If it's always on, you want the shortest cables possible. Velcro it to the top of your amp. Otherwise, yeah, quality counts. I'm partial to Whirlwind. Better than Monster at half the price.

However, I find eq's to be noisy, and somewhat tone robbing. There may be a better solution. Can you be clearer on what you're using it for?

Personally, I've found Whirlwind cables to be quite susceptible to feedback and static from fluorescent lights more than any other cable I've used. I recently went into a small guitar store while on a trip, and asked what they thought were the best patch cables they thought they carried, and one of the people working there immediately picked up an Ibanez cable, about 5" long, and the name has escaped me for the time being... But, they have worked extremely well, and are very highly insulated against static and feedback. I definitely recommend those if you are looking for a shorter cable. I'll see if I cant find the actual cable and post it on here later.
But, I still thing (In my personal opinion) that Whirlwind's are very lightly insulated. But, it all depends on your playing environment, because they still have great sound, put aside the static. Only my opinion...

Jon,

I have to fully agree with Randy here on this one. Stick to what Randy and the other have told you, get the short cables and you will be spot on.

Yup, I think that's the best choice in this situation. As long as you always keep it on, though.

Interesting! Can you get back to us with the name of the cable you like? I'll try some out.

I use Canare, some use Mogami. You gotta search it on the net to find this type of cable and buy it by the spool. I was lucky enough that someone sold it from there spools. The cable is worth it and some of my cable have lasted for over 25 years. I make my own by the way using switchcraft plugs. I have also used the Neutrek (sp) connections for my mic cables as well.

There are also George L's that I heard are pretty good. But Canare and Mogami are what is used in broadcasting.

Running an eq in the effects is fine. The only problems you may run into is the matching impedance from the output of the loop to the input of the device and back. Most signal devices match okay but I do not know if you have a device that can switch between commercial or consumer use inputs.

Here are the 2 different line level signals.

–10dB line level signals: This is the standard used for consumer purchased equipment. The –10db line level connector will be either a 1/4 inch or RCA type. Most consumer equipment are setup to use this type of line level and is the most common signal level.

+4 line level signals: These line level inputs either XLR or TRS connectors and the lines are usually balanced.

Outside of that everything should be good.

Now regarding cable, yes you want good short cable. You can either use Hi-Z instrument cable of Lo-Z XLR cable. Lo-Z cable will give you the lowest signal to noise ratio.

As for cable brand, I build my own cables and use Canare Cable, others also use Mogami cable. Cable by these companies are not cheap and all cable must be custom built but are worth the investment. Some of my cables (Canare) are 23 years old are still going strong. My pedalboard cables are 23 year new old stock cable that is just totally awesome.

As for my current guitar to board, board to amp I am using the monster cable. I just wanted to check it out and so far it has been worth the investment. I hope that helps.
