Randy,

Have you owned any of the other POD's? I'm asking because I'm wondering if the XT sounds better than the 2.0, or even the X3??

I have a couple of 2.0's- one desktop and one rack mount (Pod pro) w/ a floor controller. I'm not real crazy about the way it sounds live, but it would be nice to have an easy throw down rig...

I'm just about to upgrade my XT Live to an X3 Live. They say the x3 sounds better. The XT sounds great if you use it the right way.

The problem with the XT is the cab models. They're in there by default. That's great if you're using a Line 6 cabinet where the specially-made Celestions are very neutral, but I'm using a Marshall 4x12. I had to switch off all cab models, and then it sounded incredible. The effects are top-notch.

I thought for 3 years that it didn't have a toe button in the volume rocker pedal. Turns out, you just have to push it really hard the first 10-12 times you use it. It'll switch over to wah. The x3 has about 5 different wahs, where the xt only has 1.

I thought so too! It doesn't even indicate this clearly in the manual. I'm a nerd, I read that thing cover-to-cover. It works just like a Crybaby, but you have to step hard. It'll switch from volume to wah. The switch is useless if you're in tweak mode. The first 2 or 3 times, you'll have to step so hard you'll think you're going to break it, then it loosens up a bit over time. That's why I never knew it was there. I stepped on it like a traditional crybaby, and nothing happened. I wrongly assumed it didn't have that function, and used a separate patch for wah, which sucks because there's always a little gap when switching patches.

Now I am curious and need to check it out after work. Yeah that gap between patches is awful. I am just lucky that I don't use a lot of Wah Wah anymore. I don't even use it for color. My regular EFX board has a Cry Baby and I use only when I am in the mood or if the song requires it. Funny how the Trem bar and the Wah for me have become non essential in my playing. However I love it there when I do get into that mood.

Like you, I have a different wah on my board. I got really lucky and picked up a Budda Wah on a trade deal, and it is the sweetest sound you'll ever hear. I use it on a lot of songs, sometimes as just a slow sweep.

Also like you, I'm finding myself using the whammy bar less these days.

How does the Budda compare to a Cry Baby? I have one that is about 30 years old and the one on my board that is about 3 years old. Is it the Q of the circuit that is making the difference between the two? Gotta ask as my CB are the Classic Wah sound. Dang Wah Wah have now gotten quite sophisticated.

The Budda is much warmer. I have a CB, and it's shrill by comparison. More importantly, the Budda sounds amazing with a clean sound too. It's very expressive without being nasal. I don't use my wah in the traditional boom-chika-wow-wow fashion, but rather a slow sweep through rhythm and slower leads. I'll tuck it all the way back, and bring it forward as I increase my pick dynamics. It's like, well... Budda Butta.

I have played through the other POD's but never owned one. I only own the XT. My problem with POD's are 1) the clean sound and 2) the digitization of the signal. I broke down on the XT as the clean sound was somewhat pure and I could not completely hear the sampling. Over time I can now hear it again and at times it gets irritating.

As for live, the XT sounds great through my Marshall. If it goes through a PA, I can still hear the sampling but blow it off cause once everyone is playing, it blends in. As for the sound in general, I like it. On the drive and gain edits, the sound I am looking for comes close. Michael is right about the cabinets. You do need to adjust them but that maybe what I like about it. I can custom tailor the tone that I am seeking and just roll with it.

I use the VOX, JCM800, and Fender Blackface sounds. I do want the expansion kit so I can use the bass patches along with the Classic tones.

It is an easy throw down option when I rehearse in a small setting. Just plug into the PA and play. Had I been still playing Waikiki like 25 years ago, I would be using the POD. I use to use the Rockman Sustainer module system and just go into the PA for our three member midi band.

The problem I have with the POD 2.0 is that the clean sound won't clean up enough and then the gain sounds don't cut through the mix once the band lays into it.

We've played a couple of gigs where we all had to run direct to keep the stage volume really low. For those, I wound up using the POD on a blackface setting and then still using my pedal board. It defeats the purpose of portability, but my Mesa V Twin pedal sounds a lot better then my Pod distortion.

Interesting...when I do pickup gigs with my Dr. buddy the other guitar player uses V-Twin when we rehearse. My Pod (IMHO) sounds better. My patches are not stock. I sat there for hours just tweaking away to get what I wanted. In the long run it is worth. For the short being it can be frustrating but you have to know what sound you want before you start. That is why I want the expansion pack. There is a few more amps that I wanted.

I am sure it will be easy to record with. Just gotta do it!

That one I don't know. I am kind of spoiled with old analog effects so those sounds are my reference point. On my XT, I did alot of tweaking to get the specific sounds I was looking for. I am only familiar with the original pod and it was great for what its worth. However, the XT is miles ahead because of the programmability. Just that ability to adjust, you can really dial in what you are seeking. The other thing I like as well is that they improved on the dynamics. You can hit a note and depending on your attack, you have some dynamic control. This was a major downfall on the original version. The other nice feature is the numerous amp samplings available. I use a JCM800 and they have a sample algorithm that I like. There is also the Marshall Plexi, Brown sound Plexi when he used the Variac, VOX AC30, etc. to give you an idea of the different choices. The original POD had different labels but the XT gets specific in it replication. Also as Michael mentioned, you can choose your cabinets of choice and cabinet miking. Alot of variables to dial in the sound. You gotta be patient however as this not just plug and play gear - well it is if you use stock patches. I am sure the X3 will be even more advanced but for me, it does not justify any type of update at this time as both platforms use the same algorithms. I am sure that the X3 has some different features more advanced than the XT but not worthy of an upgrade at this time.

That would be great! I have the old software for the 2.0. I guess the Pod farm is the newer version. I'll look and see if it's a free download.

I wish I would've had the XT when I played the National Anthem at the football games. It would've made my load in much easier up all of those steps. They did make the playoffs though, so maybe I'll be getting it just in time.....

I did spend a lot of time tweaking my patches on 2.0, but I could never quite get them there for live stuff. It sounded great in the studio though. In fact, I haven't used an amp for recording in a long time.

I think I might also fork out for an M Box Pro Tools package. It sounds like that will handle all my sequencing and recording needs for now. Kind of a drag though, I was getting pretty handy with Garage Band.

Of course, all this will have to be approved in the "accounting department";-)

I would say go for it. You can use the Live XT with an iPod for learning tracks, plug into a board (PA), DI into a recording console and program up the yin-yang. The catch is you gotta want to make the effort to program as most people don't. You can store all you patches via the Line 6 Monkey through USB. Along with upgrades directly from Line 6 if you are registered.

I like this, because I've run stereo for years, with different amps for each channel. The sound is much bigger than using just one amp. Since that's a pain in the ass, I got the Duoverb, which was great until I dun-blowed-it-up.

I'm thinking about using the amp settings, and using a tube power amp. It'd be nice to have a rack like the big boys! Carvin makes an all-tube amp for $550. Since I can't afford the bit VHT, ENGL, or Marshall power amps, this should do nicely.

This one is one Feebay for $152.00 as of this writing.

This thing just sounds great and loaded with 4 - EL84's. It is sad the Peavey name doesn't hold up as well for some of their product line as they do have some gems that they have produced.
