Fender Jazzmaster overhaul.

I have a Fender Jazzmaster that I would like to do a complete overhaul on. It has the same bridge it came with (the strings sit softly on top) and I really do not like this. The strings are constantly popping off and moving. Any suggestions for a better bridge? Also I would like to get some better sounding pickups.
I am thinking as going so far as to strip the entire guitar and repaint it. I love this guitar but it is in pretty bad shape. Any good articles or advice you could give me would be a huge help. Thanks.

If you have the time and patience, you may find that you can do a decent job of repainting with spray cans. One secret is to warm up the can in some warm water just prior to spraying - makes the paint flow better. It is important to spray several thin coats of sealer, primer and color, and of course , several thin coats of the clear coat. Then sand out any runs in between coats.
I recently re-did a headstock on an old guitar with paint from the auto-parts store.
Prep work is key to a good finish. You will have to decide how much of the old finish needs to come off. If you have dings, you need to fill. If you leave any old paint/finish, you need to paint over it with something compatible.
Guitar World had several articles on painting - there is a book out too, about painting a guitar with paint cans. |

I haven't tried one, but the design concepts seem
sound to me, and the demo video seem convincing.
As for refinishing you might want to look at
Guitar Reranch.

They specialize in spray can nitrocellulose
lacquers, which many luthiers and players believe
have superior sonic properties to your average
polyester/urethane lacquers which home refinishers
(as well as most mass production guitar builders)
typically use. they also have an advice forum
which would be quite handy for a first timer. |
