Help!!!! The volume on my MG30DFX keep cutting out, has anybody had experience of this and can help me out with a repair I can do?? I'm handy with a solder iron but cannot see what the problem is! Thru headphones its fine, all the pots work and no crackle... but soon as I turn up the volume it cuts in and out!
Any info would be much appreciated!
Cheers!

If it still works thru headphones, it's not the preamp stage, which means it's in the output. More expensive to fix. It could be the transformer. When you say "cutting out," is it an abrupt cutting out, or does it fade in and out? If it's abrupt, it can also be as minor as a bad connection to the speaker. |

Hi Michael,
Yeah, it happens when you turn it up about half way and it suddenly crackles and the volume goes right down to nearly zero then it kicks back in again and bloody deafens me! lol, I have checked the spades leading to the speaker and they were loose so tightened them up but now I am at a loss!
Cheers! |

Aha! Spray the pots out! That volume pot is dirty. There are a couple places you can get contact cleaner spray. Radio Shack is the easiest. A can runs about $8, and is the miracle cure. Remove the chassis from the amp. On the back of the pots, there's a notch. Get the plastic straw right on there, and give it a few good shots. Move the volume control back and forth (full sweep) vigorously in between each shot. Try 3 shots. Let it dry for about 2-3 hours, and then see if that fixes your problem. Let me know. If that doesn't work, you'll have to replace the pot. I'll guide you through that too. I'm about do do that with an old Marshall Master Reverb 30. |
