Star Spangled Banner

I had been asked to play the Star Spangled Banner for a couple of my kids' football games. I've already played it once, about 2 weeks ago. I played it with distortion, delay, and wah. I played straight for the most part, but added in a few melody embellishments, trills, and copied Hendrix by adding "Taps" toward the end. I did some rock guitar "weedly weedlies" on the lyric wave".. banner yet wave---"

Most of the people complimented me, but I had one guy say "that was..... interesting". We all know what that means:-)

I'm supposed to play again this Saturday. Do you think I should play it more straight? I was wondering if taking liberties with it would offend someone, and then again on the other hand, I think I should play it the way I want. The kids like it when I rock it out a bit.

Opinions?

Play it for the audience bro! Go for broke man. The kids loved it and so did many of the parents. As for the one person, he probably wishes he were the one performing or just a skeptic.

I say get yerself a big ol Afro wig, a long flowing red headband, and a white jumpsuit, play it like ol' Jimi, and rock on with your bad self!

Oh yeah, don't forget the lighter fluid for the finale! LOL

I thought so. I guess I needed a little reassurance on my approach from my musical brethren.

Funny side note:
Last time, I had no idea of what to expect in terms of plugging into a board to get into the house system. Well.. it was raining that day. I had to carry my guitar, 1X12 amp, and my Pod Pro up the slippery, aluminum steps to the booth. There is no board, just a cheap mic that looks like something out of the 1950's. I had to ask the announcer to hold it in front of the amp. The only speakers were.. horn type loudspeakers, like you'd see in a warehouse. So this time, I'm bringing the desktop Pod and a 10 or 15 watt Crate that I use for guitar lessons.(I think the speaker is 8")

Bottom line: It won't matter what gear I'm using coming through that mic and those speakers, and I'll have the easy load in, load out:-)

I'll work on getting the wig and the rest of the get up......

.... the night before I find out that the game has been moved to the new high school stadium (upgrade). When I got there, they said that the school district wouldn't let the little league use the PA system. I drove home and got a JBL EON 15 and a speaker stand, and a mic. I plugged the Pod directly into the EON and the mic too (The EON G2's have 3 inputs) I played the Star Spangled Banner just as I had done before. They seemed to like it... and then they asked me to announce the game and suggested I play guitar through out the game. I figured what the heck, so I did.I tried to play music that fit the scenario - brick wall defense- I played Pink Floyd " Another Brick.." A few people were yelling requests...I kept it light and had fun with it.

You never know what will happen at these things:-)

I have at least one more home game to do on Oct 10.

That other guy wasn't there. His kid is on another team, but I knew him from a previous baseball season.

Even though I make my living with music, it always feels good to do it just to help out. I had fun.

...and next time I do it, I won't be feeling crusty from the gig the night before. I'm off on the Friday night before the early Saturday game. I'm not so good in the AM the night after gigs:-)...not because of drinking or anything, it just takes me a long time to wind down and go to sleep...

Bonus: They said they would link my website to theirs, listing me a sponsor, which will hopefully increase my teaching biz.

That is super killer Dan! Now all you need (that is if you wanted) is a background track to help some improve during the game.

Bumper music brother!!!
