I was such a big Beatles fan in the old days but today I can only listen to at most 7 or 8 of their original songs all the way through (Don't Let Me Down, Ballad Of John & Yoko, Come Together, For You Blue, I Want You, and a few more) before getting bored. Yet I never tire of listening to their cover songs (Chains, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, Boys, Act Naturally etc.....). I'm in a quandary, any explanations?

Radio Overplay...Musician Overplay...Television Overplay... Rockband overplay...it happens when one type of music or songs are overexposed. You get sick of it.

Don't forget Sweet Home Alabama. Talk about overplay. I have
been a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan since the '70s and have worked on
learning some of their more obscure stuff, but those two songs are
like fingernails down a chalkboard.

And yes, whenever I got into a guitar store, I listen for the
obligatory wanker playing Stairway to Heaven. That and Enter
Sandman...LOL

Yeah I will be playing that song again on Oct. 10th. My doctor buddy has a gig and I usually play with him and the band. The good exception is that as he says: "I'm Mexican and not from the south. If I go down there, I will get my neck wringed. So we are going to sing it as - Sweet Home California". Hooo Haaaa!!!!

As for Skynard's other songs, I hear more of "Gimme Three Steps".

liked...until I heard it for about the 3 millionth time.

That's funny brother Pinto! When I used to work in the music store eons ago, Stairway was being played on the radio and in the stores. One dude used to pick up the guitar, face it in my direction and begin to play the f**king song. Then he asked if I knew how to play it and could I show him....Bwah ha ha - yes I know how to play it and NO, I am working so I will not be playing it.

As for Freebird, never heard anyone really play it. Just lost of requests for it. I heard more bad versions of Crazy Train (just for Mike L because of the Ozzy note).

Funny thing Randy,

There are certain songs that I NEVER learned, and you would think that every guitar player knows how to play them... I just never had any desire to learn them...And they would be the 3 most common:

1) Stairway
2) Dream On
3) Freebird

Never tried learning them, still don't want to! LOL

Now that is funny Chris, because those are a few of the songs I learned when I first started playing back in '77. It's obvious at that time, those songs were fresh and new. Today - ugh - Oldies but goodies I guess. Who would have thought that these songs can be played on the oldies channel. Imagine "Paranoid, Iron Man and the song Black Sabbath (mandatory Ozzy chat)" all being played on the oldies station - LMAO!!!

I remember reading an article with Glen Tipton from Judas Priest. He was asked how he could stomach playing "Breaking the Law" after all of these years. He said that if he was asked to play that at a jam at his house , he would lose it, but when he plays in front of thousands of fans that are into it, he still enjoys it.

I can't listen to the songs mentioned when they come on the radio either, but I do play many of them in cover bands, and like he said, if they're into it, I'm into it. Not to mention, after playing covers for many years, I always look for room to throw in my 2 cents.... work on some diminished licks in the solo for "Play that Funky Music"..sure , why not? Mustang Sally?.... reach for the Jeff Beck or the Robben Ford bag..There's always room to go quirky if you reel it back in in time.

I agree with you Dan that you can come up with interesting, new and fresh ideas to play over some songs like "Play That Funky Music" and others as well. With that in mind, how about "Margaritaville" and "Brown Eyed Girl" (Spasms of vomiting occur as the songs were mentioned), I have yet to find a way to make those interesting. It could be that I not choose too because of past situations of seeing specific dancers that haunt still my memories. Doing those gigs have made me blind when I play those two songs. As Haley Joe Oswald said in Sixth Sense - "I see (you fill in the blank) dancers"!

Randy,
Margaritaville- I usually sing that song, so I can't play around as much. But when someone else is singing it, I treat it like a country tune and do improvised fills during the verses. I never get bored if I'm improvising. (it may suck sometimes, but I'm still not bored:-)

Brown Eyed Girl- I never strum open position cords on that song. I usually play around with arpeggiating different inversions up & down the neck, thrown in a fill here & there, and we always put a solo in it.

My approach to playing covers is to play the signature licks, and have fun with the rest of the song, going with whatever my mood is at the time; but staying within the genre's stylistic parameters.... most of the time anyway.

For both songs I don't strum either but Travis pick. Like yourself a slew of root, 1st and 2nd inversion triads to help make it interesting. I don't sing the lead but do sing the backups and like yourself have resorted to country doublestops and bends to keep it interesting. It just has run its course.

If you're bored with double stops and bends, maybe some of the open string cascade licks would be worth trying. They can be quite a challenge.

I have been working on that but on my own. That in itself is definitely a challenge as you try to get adjacent strings as you either ascend or descend the scale. They work in those songs quite well because of the keys they are played in.

The other one is interweaving two string Dom7, dim7, min7 arps and make either the inner or outer voicings move while either descending and/or ascending. This helps to make the line more interesting.

The bottom line is just flat out hate those songs. I play it because the crowd enjoys. After all that is why you are there. Sometimes I will just play it straight because that in itself can be a challenge. You know yourself most bands throw in their own twist to try and keep it fresh.

Chris,

Actually I have a long time ago. Muzak, as I understand it, is designed to put people in the right mood for the time of day. During the busy part of the day, they play soft sounds to relax people. Late at night they kick it up a notch to keep people awake.

I used to work in a restaurant that had piped in muzak. After we closed, I would often stay late to clean up, do paperwork, etc. Sometimes I was there during the small hours of the morning and I was really surprised when I realized some of the hard rock they were playing then. This was in the '70s and I used to hear muzak versions of Pink Floyd, Led Zepellin and others. I think I even remember hearing some Black Sabbath in there. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were playing Judas Priest or Metallica later on. You just have to listen in the middle of the night!

Have you ever heard the Alex Skolnick trio? He plays jazz versions of hard rock/ metal tunes. He used to play in the metal band Testament. Here's his version of The Scorpions "Still Loving You".

A great melody sounds good no matter what style that it's played.
