When you write a song, what comes first - The Lyrics
or the Music?

I have only written a couple... the music came to me first, then some words. There was a lot of back and forth between the two once the words started to develop.

Both. However my lyrics tend to be more cheesy and philosophical. I am better at melody, harmony and rhythm.

As a guitarist, the music seems to always come first- whether it's a riff or a melody...but, I have no rule. I just go with flow when it happens.

I'm with Randy on this one...both for me also. When the lyrics come first, the song seems to write itself. When the music comes first, I have to make sure there is a credible melody within the music before I even attempt to write words for it. Music for the sake of music just doesn't cut it for me. If there is no hook and something just sounds cool for the sake of being a good riff, I'll archive it and work on it another time or use it in something else. But I never sacrifice a hook for the sake of "wow this is a killer riff!" :)

My songs are da' BOMB, yo!

Man, I can write the BEST heavy metal lyrics....

Now, I can't give away all my trade secrets for great songwriting, but, I think if you check this out this first verse for my latest up & coming heavy-metal explosion of an album, you'll get an idea of just how one of my brilliant songs comes together....

Just check out these lyrics:

(Fast tempo)

See Spot Run...
CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA

He Runs Fast
CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA

Watch Him Go
CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA

He's got little toes
CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA CHUGA

So, that's just a small portion of my mad songwriting skills....I know, I know,....I completely ROCK! No need to bow, or anything...

And, don't nobody be stealin' my stuff! This is copyrighted "top notch" material!!!!

OK, that was just silly fun....
Actually, all kidding aside, I completely SUCK at songwriting (mainly lyrics), but, whenever I get an idea for something, it's usually the "melody" that comes first. And sometimes it's the actual "tempo" that I mess with first.

Chris

Is that done with a low rumble growl on the vocals? And are the instruments tuned to C# or C brother Pinto?

No joke, if my lyrics were any cheesier, they'd be on a sandwich!
