iPod... good or bad?

I think the iPod is the worst invention. EVER.

Most artists are slightly conflicted (Ex. Nickelback) - when you listen to their CD is seams almost skitzophrenic because on one side, there are the songs that are there solely for radio play and there are others where you hear the soul of the band.

With the iPod, the masses buy the hits.

Since most music is revenue, the "industry" produces more "hits".

In the day when you could buy a CD or a record, sometimes a "B-side" as the older generation likes to call it, would take on a life of its own and become popular.

Now, there's no incentive to create any good B-sides because they aren't going to be picked up on iTunes or Amazon Music.

Frustrating.

I know people that have thousands of songs in their collection, but they will listen to the same song OVER and OVER and OVER until they are burned out on that song... or the artist.

That... is one of the reasons why I don't own an iPod, or a Zune, or a Sansa.

I have not heard a lot of albums lately that are what I would call good and solid all the way through. Perhaps thats why people play those same 2 tracks. I see your point where the industry has pushed the singles and encouraged the fillers on CDs. Then again, you can load that portable with whatever you want to hear - classical, jazz, the latest pop music - singles , entire albums or whatever.

I don't think the portables are the worst thing in the world. I do think the Ipod is overpriced. I have 3 other mp3 portables that do all I need - and the combined price is about the same as an Ipod. The Creative Labs and RCA Pearls have mics where you can record jam sessions or voice, and the Pearl has its own USB thingy on it, so no cable needed.

Back on track... I think a lot of the CDs have filler and just a couple good tracks sometimes... so that other good tracks can be saved for the followup !

Cin, you're a posting machine! I love it! :)

My take on it is a bit different. I think it's an awesome invention and depends how YOU the individual uses it. The issue that I DO have with the ipod is, the majority of the world is listening to music that has cost millions to create and has taken countless hours to set up. All this rammed into a 1 inch earbud. Because the industry knows this to be factual, production is slipping away.

You'll notice (since you mentioned Nickelback) if you fire up one of their tunes on your ipod and then run the same tune on a pair of good speakers, you have sub-low, rumbly bass going on. You don't hear this on the ipod because the earbuds can't pick up frequencies that low. To me, this was a lazy mix and a mastering engineer that either was told to cater to earbuds, or it is as I said...production is slipping away and doesn't matter anymore.

But, I think it is truly amazing that you can put a bunch of your favorite albums on one piece of media. Seriously, it's brilliant! But like I say, it depends on the user really. I love it that I can press a button and load up Chicago Transit Authority and listen to the entire thing and then press another button, and I got Billy Joel "The Stranger" album. Another click and I'm listening to "Danny D demo's" to see how my latest mixes of my own stuff or client material is fairing. So it all depends who you are and how you use something like this....but to me, it's priceless and I'd be lost without it. :)

2 things...
1) Dual Driver Ultimate Ears. I love the way they sound over ear buds.
2) Satellite Radio... I'm biased.

I listen to a French pop station all the time that is just incredible from a music production perspective... or the ability to listen to deep album tracks or jam bands... music from the 40's??? Good.

Very good.

Irony has it Cinda, I love my iPod. However all my music is transferred from my CD's into iTunes. Even though I may sacrifice some resolution

1) it is great for walking and exercizing due to size constraint.
2) traveling on an airplane.
3) traveling crosscountry (I only stash so many CD's)
4) learning songs, no tape to deal with.
5) great for background music settings.

It took me three years to finally get one (iTouch) but it works for me. I also know that some pro's use it to store there settings for things like Line6 PodXT settings for quick downloads. I believe John Ashton from the Psychodelic Furs does this as I know one the road crew members and he told me. That's alot of programming which I really don't use.

I also recently won from work and iShuffle which is great for workouts. I put enough music on to listen to what I want to practice so while exercising, I can still do aural training before my fingers touch the fretboard.

No more walkman's or walkman cd players needed.

Eh, I have a simple little MP3 player....Good enuf!

I can jam 1000 songs on it, it's great for my evening walks, or working-out, and it has an AM/FM tuner built into it. What more could you ask for?

I can't see spending that much money on an iPod....I spend MAYBE $20 bucks on my MP3 player, and I'm good to go! hehe

Do I think they're a good invention? Sure! BUT, it depends on each individual, I suppose.

Chris

I was lucky bro. I won my iPod shuffle at work. My iTouch was a gift from wife and I use for a lot of things other than just music.

I think good . I think music has been liberated to a degree . For ever buiness men in suits decided, how we bought music, how much it was , who got to record it . Many people just like the hits and I think giving people choice on how they consume is a good thing. As people who are really into music we look for a different experience by feeling a whole album

Now any musician with some decent gear can record an album and get it out there to be heard . The way we buy music and films is going to change in the next 10 years. We will be paying a monthly fee , like a utilities bill for access to a online catalogue . How this will filter back to the musicians is the question ? will these same men in suits just end up with the bulk of the cash again ? I hope not .

If i tunes has done anything its dropped the price of buying an album here in OZ from $33 to $15 .which is a much more reasonable price for me .I buy allot more albums cause of it
