What guitarists are inspiring you?

Every once in a while you need a little inspiration...

At the moment, I've been listening to a lot of

1) Dominic Miller - his chord voicings, touch, tone, rhythmic ideas are all an inspiration. I was listening to an interview the other day (an old interview) and spent about 2 hours exploring Chopin.

2) Eric Johnson - compositionally one of the strongest guitar players I can think of. Mixing the correct tone at the correct time with the correct phrasing... incredible.

3) Billy Sheehan - yes, a bass player. I went to a clinic and listened to him talk about the way that he approaches the mechanics of his playing and how he practices non-music things to train his fingers, then morphs them into musical things to train his ear.

Hi Cinda,

Nice topic. I'm sure we'll see all kinds of stuff.

Ok, Brian Setzer, right out of the chute. His chord work just kills me.

Good Ol' Carlos Santana. For taking pretty much phrases and patterns that just about anyone can play, but saying something with them.

Peter Frampton....Yeh, Peter Frampton, his recent instrumental album covered a LOT of different material. Really interesting and, at least to me, nice work with melodic style playing.

Wes Montgomery...I can sit and listen to his stuff for hours at a time. Just wish I had the patience to sit down and learn his stuff, or style.

Recently listened to Eric Johnson. Odd as it seems, I never heard Cliffs of Dover until last year.......DOH!!!

And for bluesy Rock and just getting into some down & nasty guitar, Joe Bonamassa.

There are probably others. If a name is mentioned, I'd probably say, "oh yeh! Him/her, too" but I'm toast tonight.

Good topic, Good way to find new inspiration!

I have a Joe Bonamassa DVD... I don't think I've ever watched it. I'm going to check it out this weekend when I can really enjoy it...

Ry Cooder and David Lindley: just amazing what you can do with acoustic guitar / mandolin / bouzuki or electric slide guitar ... hauntingly beautiful

Warren Haynes: IMHO best current blues rock player (great tone, too)

Willie Nelson: Just great phrasing and chord melodies

Buddy Miller: Great songwriter, too, but I first heard and saw him playing with Spyboy and Emmylou Harris. Doing Emmylou songs as a trio is quite demanding for a guitar player (big shoes to fill, too ... think of James Burton, Albert Lee, Frank Reckard who played with Emmylou).

B.B.King: saying it all with one note ...

David Grissom: First heard him with Joe Ely, then short stint with Mellencamp, then a band called Storyville and work with people from Shannon Curfman to the Dixie Chicks. Very recognizeable sound and style.

Yeah, I first heard Sonny when he was playing for John Hiatt and then I bought some of his CDs. Very interesting technique, too - fretting behind the slide.

Cinda,

Old Bro' Bob Kent sent me a DVD of Bonamassa doing a gig in Germany, I think. The dude really rocks and wails the blues. hard worker! But entertaining. The bass player was a bit much, for me at least. But definitely Joe's a good find.

Hey Andrew,

I haven't heard from Bob Kent around here for a long time. I guess he had enough of us. The last recording I heard of him was really good. Good to know he's still around.

Dale,

Yeh, he's still around. A few months go, he did a collaberation with some guy, I think from Germany? The guy laid down some stuff and Bob tracked over it. Really good.

He's been working a lot lately, too. So some of the music had been sitting by the way side. he was hoping to get back into it soon.
