Callouses

Okay... I joined this site when I first started playing guitar in 1999. A lot has changed in my style of playing since then and the way that I approach guitar.

When I first started, people told me that I needed callouses in order to be a real player.

Then I met a guitar player - Regi Wooten (Victor Wooten's brother) - both of the's guys have fingertips on their fretting hand that are as smooth as a babies bottom.

I asked Regi why he had no callouses and he said - "It shouldn't have to hurt in order to male music."

When I look at other musicians - violinists, piano players, sax players, it appears as though guitar players are the only ones that want to join this fraternity.

Now? When I look at my fingers, I only have one small callous oon my middle finger, and that's the one that I usully use when I slide notes.

Interesting...

How are your fingers?

Do you play electric or acoustic?

I play both acoustic and electic and I don't have callouses. When I play more and begin to start developing them, I will stop for a day or so to let the fingertips heal. Do this enough and your fingertips will begin to toughen up. So on the site of skin tearing, I would stop no how much I want to play. Besides there other things I can work on - right hand technique, aural training, theory. You can still fret but not shred.

I used to have callouses, for quite some time, actually....Part of the reason was because of my playing style. They were much worse when I first started to learn guitar....back in 1981/1982

Up until 6-7 months ago, I was playing with my fingers on a serious angle to the frets, but, seems my teacher is now breaking me of this habit, and I've been trying to play with my actual fingertips, instead of the sides of my fingers. I'm now trying to play with my fingers more vertical....
