One of my favorite thing to do is to check out my favorite musicians personal web pages and then see who they listen to.
It's amazing how some signed musicians are completely turned on by musicians that are unsigned.
Not all musicians do it, but it's pretty cool to wander down and listen to some pretty obscure studio musicians that have their own projects.
Am I the only one that does this?

I used to read Guitar Player religiously in my younger days. From there I would find out whom that player listened to and would head to the local wax or CD store to find the artist and explore the catalog. I had some great finds that have had a great impact on my own playing. I think that is one of the greatest ways to enjoy other styles of music and learn something new from the traditional mainstream of music we hear today. |

That's how I discovered Danny Gatton - Guitar Player did a feature on him: "Best unknown guitar player". |

Not really, given the fact that I knew that mainly from reading magazines and interviews.
Known artists talk about their influences and I've been surprised some times...Can't remember studio musicians beeing pointed.
I'm not very used to go to my favorite artists websites. May be I'll start doing that.

Here is a few great studio players I love to listen to but you need to look at the credits:
Brent Mason - Country Studio Extraordinaire.
Michael Landau - 80's - 90's great. He was on alot of stuff (Boz Scaggs, Linda Ronstadt, comes to mind). Plus he has his personal touches - The Raging Honkies".
Dann Huff - Another studio "Giant" (pun intended). Check his list on his website. Plus his band as mentioned earlier - Giant. He is now a producer in Nashville and just finished my favorite country artist - Martina McBride.
Larry Carlton - Most recognized to me in Steely Dan (I am sure I will be corrected).
Skunk Baxter - Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers. |

I do that, as well! I like to see what some of my favorite artists listen to...
Not that Paul Stanley is one of my favorite musicians, BUT, this reminds me of something funny... I remember watching something on VH1, in regards to 70's pop music, and Paul Stanley (from KISS) mentioned that he loved ABBA! And what he said, has always stuck with me...
He said something like: "I absolutely love ABBA...Their vocal harmonies were simply incredible. And if you're a true musician, and you can't see that, then you just don't get it".
For some reason, that was a pretty powerful statement, that really stuck in my little brain. Because I've always felt the same way about them. (ABBA)

See... I agree completely with what he said. There are styles of music that I don't like, but sometimes I find myself listening to them if the song and musicianship are good.
It's all about the love of music! |

Exactly!
I gotta tell ya', I think Karen Carpenter had one of the most angelic voices on Earth. When I listen to the beginning of "Hurting Each Other".....OH MY GOD!!!!!
I believe that musicians should have a very open mind.....Of course there's going to be bands, singers, artists that you don't like (and that's cool).....You obviously can't like everyone.....But, having a wide appreciation can only help you become a more well-rounded musician.
Hell! I get soloing ideas from vocalists like Karen Carpenter! HONEST!
