What's really a solid way of practicing guitar to learn a song?

Ken's suggestions above are all good. Break the song into sections or phrases. Work on each section sloooowly at first to make sure you are playing everything with good tone and in time. If a particular place in a section gives you more trouble than the rest, concentrate your practice time on that place till you get it, then add the rest of the section to it. As you complete a section add it to the rest of the song you have already mastered. Soon you will be playing the whole thing at speed, executed properly.
As far as singing and playing, I find that it works better for me if I get the guitar part down first so its a no brainer to play and then work on the vocals. If the song has just a chord sequence played with easy strumming then the vocals are all I have to work on.
Hope this all helps.

I always start with the "hardest" parts, first. And, as the previous 2 posts have already said...."Break the parts down, into manageable sections", then, move on to another section. This is usually the best way to do it...

BUT, there is no right or wrong way to practice, really. As long as you practice... Which sadly I don't do enough of..... LOL :D

1 Warm up properly
2 Always use a metronome or rhythm track
3 Observe basics at all times - Postion/posture - breathing - note articulation and make sure you are in tune.

Understand and respect your weaknesses.

Recognize mistakes and weed them out.

This may seem really simplistic, but it is so needed - If you play something you don't like, don't do it again. I have seen some people who just don't weed out mistakes and very unpleasing lines. They just get really good at playing bad.

If you don't have a teacher, get one.

Anyone who is self taught, is taught by a beginner.

Chris makes a good point - I had some informal instruction on guitar, then learned on my own, then briefly took lessons as a kid.

I think some good guidance, especially early on, is helpful.

The early guidance helps with the basics and foundation which is usually most boring part. It is the great money maker for teachers but having the wrong or bad teacher can make the student quit sooner. A good or great teacher will promote growth which will keep the interest of the new player.

Everyone makes good points. I would stress the slowing it down part. Take it up as you can, but make sure that you maintain steady tempo. If you're staggering, slow it down again. You've got to learn it in tempo.

I suppose I could add to some of the excellent tips in this thread.

Listen to the song if you can and get the feeling of it. Play through it a lot without memorizing it. Get the organization and theme of the music. This will make it easier to learn the different sections because you will recognize them easier.

Afterwards, practice the smaller phrases like they said.

This is how I learn things. IN fact, sometimes I just happened to listen to something multiple times and learn it much later.

Follow other people's advice but also follow your own methods.
