Talk Box!

I think this is an excellent invention. Mainly because it serves as better than wah (well I think it's better). There are "vocal" like sounds that can't be done with a standard wah pedal. In simplistic terms, you can hook up a vinyl tube to a small speaker in such a way that it is air tight (except for the part you place in your mouth). Here's a video that I found that instructs you on how to make a talk box. More specifically a "ghetto" talk box.

How to make Talk Box

Example

Anyone use these before? My friend gave me a project and that was to create a talk box. It sounds like fun although I hope I can be successful with it.

I made a version eons ago. In fact I ended up modifying what I did. I started with a Big Muff Pi and drove a 2.5 watt amp. The amp was based on an old chip (new when I built it - LM380N). This amp drove a Radio Shack Tweeter. Take the tweeter and cut the horn off. Attach the appropriate fish tank tubing and there you go!

Things to consider.
1) Instead of a Big Muff Pi, chose you overdrive box or build your own.
2) Install a volume control. You will be surprised at loud 2.5Watts is. At maximum going through the tube, can vibrate some good fillings out - LOL.
3)Have is fun!

Loud sound is crucial. I'm very interested in this although I need to take the time to gather materials and assemble it.

Thanks for the advice though. I want to make a surprise!

"Loud sound is crucial". Actually not. 2.5Watts is quite loud within your mouth. Remember the sound resonates in your mouth and is amplified by the PA from a microphone.

Yeah, I found out just how powerful that sound can be in your mouth, the first time I used my first talkbox. Was funny though.... :)

Man, my teeth were vibrating for a little while after that!

When you get it setup, it will be loads of fun. After you get used to it, try to create musical words like Peter Frampton did. That will blow your mind.

Randy -

Did you use the Craig Anderton book? I have one of his books, never could find all those parts..
There are a lot of basic things in it that make sense

I started with an article from guitar player by Craig. I believe he published it his early books eons ago. As for the parts, It was easy to find (back then). You could probably find a newer compact power amp chip and use you favorite distortion box and avoid the preamp circuitry. If you wish to go archaic, chose between the LM380N or the LM386. As for parts try digikey, allied electronics or newark. I am sure if you did a net search those items could be found.

My reason for avoiding the creation of the gain circuitry Craig used was that that it saturated later requiring a higher output. With a premade overdrive/distortion unit you are already familiar and can add an A/B box to switch between your normal amp and the talk box setup.

I used to own the original HEIL Talkbox, and I currently own the Rocktron Banshee Talk Box, which is a bit easier to use. I really like it...It doesn't get used all the time, but I sure like having it. Sometimes I use it as a tool to for inspiration while writing songs & such, and I plan to use it in the studio on some of my own recordings shortly. But, it's a lot of fun!

It's used in a lot more songs than one may think, or even realize. And, yeah, I like it much better than using a traditional Wah pedal, but, they both have their place. (Much like any other pedal)

My old band used to play "Man In A Box" (Alice in Chains), and a few other Talkbox-related songs....Came in real handy for those gigs! ;)

Cool brother Pinto. I still go the old way with the Wah. Especially when I used to play Rocky Mountain Way and Living on a Prayer. Ditto with Sweet Emotion.

Yo! Brother Hano, what up dawg? LOL

Yeah, I feel that way sometimes...

I will use the wah, as well, because sometimes I don't want to be (or can't be) bothered with setting up the Talk Box.

Either way will certainly work, but with certain songs, I like to get the true effect, especially if I'm playing a live gig.

.....man.....it's sure been a while since I've played "Sweet Emotion"....hehehe

You are right about the setup. The positioning is crucial when setting it up with the microphone but when done, it does sound really cool!!!

One of my my FAVORITE Scorpion tunes! (The Zoo)

I'm also partial to "Sails of Charon" with Uli Jon Roth, and the song "Blackout" from "World Wide Live" album! Dam, those tunes ROCK!

Of course, ANYTHING with Uli Jon Roth ROCKS!

That guy is simply stellar!

That is all I have from the man.

As for Mathias Jabs, I only enjoyed the Lovedrive and Animal Magnatism recordings. Blackout had some highlights like the title track but I can't remember anything else past that...

I think it was Blue Oyster Cult I went to see and Aldo Nova was opening the show. Not what I was expecting. It was a great show! I was stunned. I never expected them (the whole band was good) to sound like that. They kicked into an old Grand Funk song "Footstompin' Music" and did a killer version of it!
