A friend gave me a copy of cubase recently but I'm having trouble setting up.

I can get the sound from my amp into the software but the sound only comes through one earphone, I know that the amp output from the REC out socket is mono but when I plug headphones directly into the amp I get sound through both earphones so why dont I get it through the computer?

Secondly I cant get the software to actually record anything, even though the sound is getting into the program, when i hit record and play something, then try to play it back, theres nothing to hear.

I'm sure its just a matter of setting up the software correctly but without instructions I'm flying blind, I've looked on the net, but cant find anything of use.

I use Sonar, but I think some of your problems may be universal. What kind of interface are you using?

Check your track settings. With my interface (EMU 1616) I have the option of recording one of two mono ins, or to link them into a stereo track. If you have the stereo option selected, and you're only running a mono signal, you'll only be getting half of the stereo field through your track and headphones.

The above fix may also help with your recording problems. Also, make sure the master arm is on for recording.

Good luck! Hope this helped.

Interface? assuming you mean how I've connected the guitar to the computer, I'm using a mono jack into the headphone/rec out socket which runs into the line in jack on the back of my soundcard. I should say at this point I'm using a Roland Microcube

Whats an EMU 1616?

Whats a master arm?

How do I check track settings?

I know your using different software so that last question isnt really for you.

You might check if your line in is stereo or mono.

The EMU 1616 is a analogue to digital interface that provides connections to my computer. It's made by Creative Professional; there are others available. I'd recommend looking at them for any serious recording. Your audio quality will be much higher.

After a second thought, the track arming probably isn't what's wrong. The track settings should be to the left of the screen within each track box.

This website might be able to give you some better answers than I can. You can probably find a Cubase manual floating around the net, too.
