I've been learning the guitar for about 3 years now and only recently felt confident enough to play in front of somebody for the first time recently, I was playing stuff that I had come up with myself, and heres what I was told.
1. You dont need to play everything in 8 bars (I didnt know I was playing in 8 bars)
2. That sounds like Canterbury Cathedral (is there a song called Canterbury Cathedral, or could he have been talking about the melody of the actual bells of the cathedral itself?!!?)
3. That sounds like music to me (said after I remarked that I wasnt playing as rhtyhmically smooth as I wanted)
4. That sounds like something Ry Cooder would play. (I've never ((to my knowledge)) heard anything by Ry Cooder)
5. If you worked on your arrangments you would definetly have something there.
6. I know you came in here saying you were s--- at guitar but...[drunken memory lapse on my part)...I know guitar players who've been playing for 8 years who cant play like that...[another drunken memory lapse, we'd had 6 pints of beer and 3/4 of a bottle of wine each by this stage]...you just get it, you know?
7. You do need more practice.
Anybody who to comment on these comments? Anybody want to share similar experiences?

Some of that you should take with a grain of salt.
I know people who will say " this guy is no good" just because he is playing a style of music that they don't listen to, or he is playing a tune that they have not heard.
One way to judge what you are doing is set up a mic and record onto tape or a PC. Get warmed up, set up your mic, hit record, play your tune. Then go away for a bit, get a bite to eat or something. Come back and listen to what you did on the track. If it sounds like something, you are onto something! If your time is off, you can practice on that, and record again later. |

To this day my favourite comment came from my little sister. "Is that an Eric Clapton song?" The funniest thing was she had never heard an Eric Clapton song before.
Another time was when a friend of mine tried to correct me on the key of a song. He thinks he's all that and a bag of chips, but the song had like four power chords and i was already jamming over it. I said "It's in Am" He says "No I think its in Gm" I say "why do you think that" He says "just because" I say "well i'm playing in Am right now are you telling me that i've got it wrong?" he says "play it in Gm" I go "ok". Long story short, he was very very wrong.
Most of the advice i've been given has been from people who don't know what they're talking about. You have to take everything with a grain of salt. |

You here some funny stuff out there, especially from the alcohol impaired. Here is a top 10 list I put together once.
10. Turn down, you're too loud! 9. Heard at a sports bar-Wait until after the game to start. 8. Will you guys take 100 bucks less and quit early? 7. You're pretty good but my cousin(uncle, brother, etc) plays guitar, you should hear him. 6. I play guitar, can I sit in? 5. Can you play something we can dance to? 4. How long are you guys going to be on break? You've been off for 10 minutes now. 3. What kind of guitar is that? 2. You sound just like ________. (Fill in the blank)
And the number one thing that you hear on a gig,
1. Freebird!

Here's one I don't think I'll EVER forget!!
We were playing in a small bar. We were just finding out the keyboard player had a MAJOR drinking problem, add to that the Lead guitarist had a severe head cold and his ears were stuffed up, the lead singer was preoccupied by a couple of "ladies" that had made some indecent proposals,. We had struggled through some song or another by America (Sandman or something like that). Totally butchered it, I mean TOTALLY.
As soon as it was over, there was a slight pause before our lead singer was going to say something...out of the darkness came a voice, a drunken one at that,
"Hey man! Play something Ya ALL know!!"
OW!!! But it was funny anyway!! Darn near blew snot all over the mic trying to muffle my laugh!
Quite a night from there on!

Heh, I think I've heard all these or variations of them.
Does anyone else constantly get singled out as the guy to complain about volume/song-selection/which-game-is-on-the-tv?
I mean, I'm the lead guitar player. Very rarely am I "in charge" of anything, yet I'm usually the first one the genius who hired an electric band with drums for "quiet dinner music" want to discuss the volume of the band with.
And yes, I'm very aware of my relative volume to everything else most of the time. I've been guilty of "too loud", but honestly, I've mellowed with age and pay attention to such things alot more these days.
I usually try to direct people to the "band leader" or the "sound guy", and try to explain that they are the one who might actually be able to change the over-all volume of the band, but the usually response is a somewhat indignant, "well, I just thought you should know" or some other very not-helpful comment.
(yes, I'm on a rant here)
Or better yet, have the "sound-guy" (you know, the third cousin of the drummers girlfriend) tell me, "hey, we're getting complaints about volume, can you turn down (even more)".
I look at my lil' 12watt Princeton which is mounted on a stand up-high by my ears, barely on, and look back at him and ask," are you seriously telling my I'm louder than that stack of "I gotta look like Neil Peart cuz' I sure can't play worth $%*t" drums?" He sheepishly says, "umm, no". Then what @#$*ing effect do you think me turning down is really gonna' have on the volume of the band you twit!?!? Talk to the drummer and the deaf hippy playing throught the Marshall stack on the other side of the stage!!.
There are times I've even turned my volume off, just stood there posing and practically playing air-guitar, and still be the first one told to "turn down".
I must just look very loud.
Deep breath, there, I feel much better.
I think I'll double post this on my myspace blog. ;-)
Peace, Rick |

Actually the best time was right after a Gene Bertoncini concert in my itty bitty town. I was interested in his Takamine nylon stringed acoustic/electric cutaway guitar and he invited me to try it out as he packed up some of his other gear. As I played and he packed he started nodding his head in time and asked, "Are you playing with someone? you oughta be playing with someone." |
