It means that the cutting edge of creativity is a dangerous place- one that causes many casualties. Its a bit like that old militaty aviation concept of flying just inside "The Envelope".

Flying inside the envelope still exists. Those who ignore will buy the farm sooner or later... even today. I don't quite know how that would apply here. However, doctors and lawyers as a group, used to have the greatest number of fatalities in the private flying area.
