Hello Wholenote community,
Not to cause a rukus, but does anyone else feel that Wholenote/Activebass are in need of some serious overhaul, or at least updating?
I've been a member of wholenote for MANY years now, and I don't think I've seen any changes for a least a few years now.
Most concerning is the lack of maitenence and updating of the front page, I mean, how long as Much Ado About rythem been the 'Hot Lesson'? I shouldn't be complaining, becuase my Learning to Jam has been the hot lesson on activebass.com for years now, which is good for my ego, but is not as good for the community, I remember when they used to rotated frequently and it was like, "who's the hot lesson this week?". For that matter, And when was the 'News' last updated? Blink 182, really? At the very least it could be taken off the page if the service has been stopped.
Which is ok, but it brings to mind all the new service opportunities that could be integrated into wholenote.com. The site was overhauled a few years ago to allow MP3 hosting, but has been stagnant (besides member activity of course) for a long time. With the advent and popularization of guitar lessons on Youtube, I'm suprised I don't see 'in-lesson' video links all over wholenote, or any activity into looking for new more interactive ways to participate in the community. How about a section that's linked to myvirtualband.com so that wholenote members can get together and form virtual collectives/bands over the internet, teach through playing! If Activebasssers and Wholenoters both got together on myvirtualband.com, they could actually play together, share their experiences across instrumental barriers. With a few link sections, forum sections of support, doing this could be really easy.
So... once again, my purpose is not to complain, I'm just a long time member who is concerned for wholenote/activebass and would like them to be as current as their users are.
What do you guys think? I'd like to get a discussion going if possible.
All the best, Jesse

I'll jump in to keep this thread alive! I agree that some upgrades would be nice, but is there motivation for the powers that be to do so?
I remember the posting that showed that this (Activebass and Wholenote) was all an experiment in online communities. Is it worthwhile for it to be updated? Does it make money for its owners?

Jesse, I do agree that wholenote needs at least some modification. Has the chord of the week changed?
As for the features:
The MP3s definitely need to be more organized. Why don't the "powers that be" categorize the Mp3s into genres? Also, like you said, no news or articles have been published. The interviews have not changed.
The composer:
I am a tapper and would appreciate it if the composer would provide finger indications! Especially for my recent tapping lesson. Why would I bother to explain in a lengthy essay about where to put one's fingers in the 13th Invention?? Also, I think that the composer should indicate note stems when it publishes the music. That way members can point out mistakes or even comment on compositions more efficiently.
I don't want to complain that much about wholenote since it provides so many oppurtunities for learning. There are many lessons available and experienced guitarists in the fretbuzz.

I agree with that too. However, there are a couple of recent lessons that have videos in them. Videos are definitely becoming more popular. IMO, there should be more videos on this site.

I think a definitive answer posted in the Forum from one of the administrators stating their feelings on the topic would be a good idea. Are they open to the idea of making changes, are the changes feasible, who would actually reprogram the site to make the changes?Maybe before we all get fired up about making changes to someone else's website we should find out what their feelings are on the matter. If this is a "money making" website then it would seem that the idea of keeping it updated regularly would be in their best interest. But,if it's not bringing in any profit and is basically an online charity, who could blame them for not wanting to invest more time and money into it?I'd love to see the site have regular updates and the homepage have current and relevant information on it.I'm all for making it more exciting for members. If having video lessons helps, fine. If having some of the other features that have been mentioned would inspire more people to visit the site and contribute, great. But without the consent of the administrators, which would require calling this discussion to their attention,I don't know that any changes are on the horizon. Peace, Alan |

Alan, I agree. Maybe it's our job to "update" this site? We could organize a group of video lessons like we did with the PAL licks in the forum. Or if that's not feasible, we could try to post videos in lessons and try to make it a trend. Otherwise, we would need a faciliator to help us. There is really not much we could do without a facilitator or administrator available.
Hmmm....

am I the only experiencing no sound from wholenote. I'm sure the problem lies n that the music note in bottom left hand corner is crossed out in red and can't get it to clear when clicked on. Anyone else? |

IŽm so glad to see such an active response to the question, becasue I asked it out of concern for the future of the site, and the response shows that others care as well.
Its intersting the different response I get here, than from Activebass, just goes to show some of the diffferences between guitar players and bass players.
I think I agree that Wholenote has a niche in this whole online guitar market thing, in the forums and the variety of material presented.
I WHOLEHEARTED agree about the video lesson thing, that Youtube makes it very easy to incorporate videos actually in your lessons, so those of us with webcams can share in the fun, as long as weŽre not ashamed of our ugly mugs or overgrown fingernails.... er... I mean....
In terms of website changes, I understand that thereŽs not much motivation for the owners to do much, but I would suggest that maybe one last update to direct the site to its current uses could be useful.
What types of EASY things do you guys think would help the flow of the site in its current form?
IŽll get out my pet peeve, which is that I think the news section should be removed, because its old and looks bad when first veiwing the site for newcommers. It gives off the impression that the site is one of the millions thats fallen out of use, but obviously, thats just not true.
Thinking constructively, can anyone think of any other easy changes? |

As far as I can tell, you can view your responses to other PMs, but I haven't seen how you can view your FIRST PM to any member.
When you click on the member name, then click on "send a message to this member," (or however it's worded), that one is lost to you, to my knowledge.
But in your inbox, click on the icon thingey to the left of any message you have responded to (the one with a red arrow on it, I believe).
It will display the message you received and your response.
One reason I keep at least one message from anyone who has sent me one is so I can have an inbox message to respond from, and therefore have a copy of my new message, even if I'm changing topics.
Hope that helps!
