I have a Seagull S6, and I would like to lower the action a bit. Unfortunately I do not have a ruler to see just how high it is and for that I apologize. I am taking this to a shop to get it done, so no worries there! I am not looking for super low action by any means, I just want to take it down a tick.
Would anybody have any suggestions for an "average" string height at the 12th fret?
Thanks in advance,
and Peace Always!

I did a bit of research and came up with 3/32" for the top/big E string at the 12th fret. |

Thanks for your input Ken. I have searched everywhere I could think of and could not find a "benchmark".

I worked with a luthier for a little while. He used to set the bottom E at 3/32" and the top E at 2/32" on electric guitars and just a little higher for acoustics if there were any buzzes or if customers requested it.
These days I prefer a slighter higher action than I used to because the tone is better and because it assists with hammer-ons and pull-offs. A super low action is often more work rather than less. |

better a LITTLE at a time. If I said 5/64 and you went there and hated it, and had to make a NEW saddle, thats more work then needed. If someone asks me to do it, what I do is take a little off, play it, have them play it, decide, go a tad more etc etc. Its a touchy feely thing thats individual, theres no true magic number. But from experience, people usually go to low and end up regretting it, and then getting a saddle/and-or new nut made. GO SLOW and save the rework cost. GOOD LUCK! |
