i can't find a website that gives the specific kind of marshall amp angus young uses. he said he uses 100watts for live performances but that's about all i know. he probably uses more than one type but let me know if you know any of them

Hey, sorry to dig up all these old threads but I read a good interview with Angus young the other day on the Gibson site (i think i just put Angus young into google and it was the first thing that came up). Talks about the amps he uses and his guitar, too. Amazingly he uses .09s and apparently just plugs straight into his amp. No effects. No nothing. Really clean settings on the amp, too. Can that be true?

Hey Adam,

I'm pretty sure he did...I'd say it's absolutely true. That's the only way you can get the kind of tone he gets.... Pretty good ain't it?

Simplicity is bliss...

I found the interview, published on the Gibson site.

http://www.gibson.com/whatsnew/pressrelease/2001/jan24a.html

On amps he says: "I take in a 100-watt top, a Marshall JTM45, and two 4x12 cabinets. Sometimes I’ll use the double cabinets or just a single 4x12."

On settings he says: "Usually, all the controls are set about halfway, never full up. A lot of people think it sounds best when you drive the amps to death, but I never do it that way."

On effects he says: "I always keep it simple...If you’ve got too many toys up there, then there’s too many things that can go wrong."

Oh yes, and when asked if he uses a boost for the lead parts, he responds: "No. The only boost between the guitar and amp is me."

Hope that helps.

That helps alot, very cool. Thanks for pasting that! I could learn to keep my EQ a little more flat then I usually do.

His rig is also on guitargeek.com as the previous poster said. The only thing is they have his strings wrong - he uses .09s not 10s.

Listen to his tone on the Back in Black CD. I've always thought that was about the best "rock" tone there was. So many people have 4,5+ pedals or all this rackmount stuff, you honestly just don't need it. Sure, if you want chorus or something then throw in a pedal that will produce that effect. But for your basic tone, if you ain't sounding good through a simple set-up, then get a new guitar, amp, or fingers. Because with a good quality guitar, amp, and talented fingers, you should be able to sound good.

Yes, that's true. But the more I play guitar the more I think tone is in the fingers. My previous guitar teacher knew nothing about music and had very shoddy equipment (a really crappy chinese strat copy - truly a horrible instrument in every way) but he made it sound really ok. When I played it it sounded just what it was: a piece of crap.

Angus hints at this idea in the interview. He says that often people would pick up his guitar to play a few riffs (man, what I wouldn't do for that kind of chance) and be really surprised at how clean it was. Suggests that a lot of the tone he got was just from the way he fretted, I guess, and his attack.
