Burn: A Musical Appreciation

I always had an idea of how complex Deep Purple's song Burn was, even was I was a small boy first hearing it in the '70's. Back then, semi-proggy bands like King Crimson, ELP, and Yes were most often praised for their often elaborate compositions.

But, for me at least, Deep Purple had always been far more interesting than the above mentioned bands. Maybe it was because they were "hard rock". in any case, back then they were favored by me above all others besides Black Sabbath (and yes, as embarassing as it seems today, Kiss was about even with 'em at the time. Things change...).

But I never realized HOW complex Burn has always been until endeavoring recently to cover it with my band. The number of chords, scalar intricacies, and sheer length of the track is staggering to say the least. I've covered Malmsteen, Rhoads, Van Halen, and Testament, but Burn is challenging even when stacked up against them.

To wrap this up, Burn has even more admiration and respect from me; that's saying alot, considering that it's been one of my all time favorite songs since I was very young.

I agree Burn is a great DP album, sadly the last great record DP did until "Perfect Strangers".My fave track is the sometimes overlooked blues of "Mistreated".That is a great track as well as the title track too.I have heard Mr Big do a cover of Burn and I thought it was pretty good and I know Micheal Angelo Batio also covered it on his latest cd,like to hear how that sounds.I saw purple last year in AC and I enjoyed Steve Morse's playing even though it's not really the same band without both Jon Lord and the man in black himself in it.I agree about In Rock as their best and also Made In Japan is their best live cd. That is a must listen too as well.
