Hey all you
Here is a question. I play in a band and we do the work alot (song writing) but we also love to improvise . And the jam's I have outside my band are all heavily improv. based . Basically improv is my favourite thing . I really find that feeling of a group of people embarking on an unkown journey really inspiring .And I find if everyone is good enough to listen and be aware, than great things happen . I love the communication and understanding that it evolves around.Sometime's you take the lead and other times you have to follow . I also understand that it is a form of music that is often alot more intresting to the players than anyone listening. We sometimes record our jam's and friends say" you guys should just get on stage and do that " Basically has anyone done that? Jumped on stage with no musical plan and just let it happen . I would love to take that challenge . I just wonder how receptive a random crowd would be ? And I also wonder if the pressure of the stage/crowd would make it harder to let the music flow ?

I think it would depend on the venue. It might not go over well in many bars, etc. But for example, we have a bar/restaurant near us named Mexicali Blues, where there are groups playing each night and open mikes on weekends - and the decor and background music is all Greatful Dead (as the owner of the place is a DeadHead). So, I know at that place a Dead type extended improv jam or just blues jam would go over really well. And there's the inbetween - like Cream did. Established songs, but with long jams in the middle that could lead anywhere.
I think there's too little of that today and I'd like to hear more of it...if it's well done! :)

I do that every other weekend, bro' Matt. It's a very cool thing. We have anywhere from three to seven players show up on Saturday nights, we each have a chance to play a solo set(length depends on the numbers of players). More often than not, I stay up to provide some accompanyment or lead fills on familiar material with the boys. Then we all sit down and play together.
I am blues based, Dave has a great funk and soul vibe(bass and git), Les the bar owner has a Spanish jazz thing going on, Charlie is country, Joe is a classic rock cat, and Harmonica Bob plays anything.(I'll have to get some of the pics up of all of us)
The crowd pays close attention when someone starts off with a progression or a bass line, and we all fall in line. It's fun to do, and a neat thing to be a part of. Great way to learn.
I use my solo time to throw in new material, play what folks have responded well to in the past, and it gives me a chance to dump the butterflies so it's easy to get comfortable in the improve jam that follows.
It's a local spot and folks don't mind us discussing or feeling out the changes. It includes them, makes them understand what we're doing, where we're coming from, and where we are going. They get a great look at how the creative wheels spin.
It's an excellent form of expression, great times man.
Cool post, m'friend.
B Cool,
