my stings are quite high off the fretboard is it advisable for me to fix it myself some people have told me to take it to a guitar shop to be repaired

I'd just do it myself. If the guitar is more expensive and you
don't know what you're doing then you'd probably be better off
not taking any chances and bringing it into a shop. If the nut is
improperly cut and that's what's causing it then you should take
it in to a shop because that's hard to fix

Acoustic or electric? With an electric, it's a simple matter of lowering the saddles some. The truss rod is only for relief not action. IMO.
