Using MIDI for Transcribtion....

I know it's probably well known, but I just discovered today that I can download MIDI files off of the internet and open them with Cakewalk and transcibe the guitar parts. I put Cakewalk into the piano roll view and just point to the notes and the note names and duration are right there. Now the thing is to find the best and most accurate MIDI file. Cakewalk shows all of the instruments and you can view it in regular notation... I've been using Cakewalk more for a learning tool than a recorder lately. I'm Working on SRV's Crossfire... fairly simple...The file is preatty good until you get to the solo.

I do this in Guitar Pro. You can import midi and it will display all the tracks as tablature. (allthough the fingering positions are always a little cheesy)

The fun part is muting the lead guitar track and playing along with the midi.

In Guitar Pro, you can also use the 'speed trainer' which comes in handy for solos. you set the starting and ending measures, the starting and ending tempo and hit play. It will continously play through those measures starting with the starting tempo you set. Then the tempo increases by 1 every time around until it gets to the ending tempo you set, then continously keeps playing at the max tempo until you stop it. You play along with it for a while and can get up to speed in about 30 minutes on most things.

There are so many uses for midi. I use it to make drums and bass for my own recordings. (as well as other instruments)

Yeah, Yeah, Cakewalk has the option for Tablature also. I can also slow it down. There's so much to all this recording and MIDI stuff, that I haven't even scratched the surface yet. Anyway I'm an old guy and we didn't have all this back in the day when I was starting out.
Take it easy Bryan.
