I need help with my pinky!!

I'm am a fairly experienced guitarist but I am kinda in rut that I am trying to get out of. One of the big problems I have is with my pinky finger on my left hand.

Although all of my first three fingers stay close to the fretboard while I am playing a note my pinky "hangs back" a couple of inches away & it affects the flow of the solo.

Maybe some of you have had the same problem & have conquered it. Please let me know!!

I am almost to the point of tying it it to the rest of my fingers but obviously this is unrealistic.

HELP!!!

A good way of training your pinky would be to practice using it.

Good luck - Rick.

I agree with Rick. If you do not use it you will lose it. After awhile it will come natural and you will build up coordination and strenght.
Good luck.

Try playing chord arpeggios where the pinky always plays the first note.

At the risk of self-promotion, may I refer you to my lesson, #4568, here on Wholenote: "A Few Tips for Beginners (and Others!)" It covers more than just the pinky, but you may find some help there.

Good luck!

try angling your wrist differently so that all fingers hit the
fretboard easily..in other words, make the flat part of
your wrist and the fretboard perpendicular..don't angle
the wrist so that the pinky is further away..it takes much
getting used to but helps a lot.

Another exercise that you might find helpful is this: play as if you don't have an index finger. Let your middle finger take its place, and so on with the other fingers. Practice this way for a couple weeks, and then go back to your regular way of playing. You'll be amazed at how much stronger your pinky will be. I KNOW this sounds weird, but try it before you judge it.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Mine does the same thing in certain positions and it doesn't seem to effect anything. Just keep playin'.

It was mentioned. Use it. The little finger is connected to the next finger with a ligament. That is why both move at times. It really has also a separate ligament that can be developed. It will take daily work on your part to get that independence. Meanwhile, without playing, place your hand on a flat surface. Curve the finger tips so that they are all resting on the surface. Now slowly lift the 3rd finger while keeping the 4th down. Then lift the 4th down when lifting the 3rd. To get this to work, you may have to touch each finger for your body to recognize the signal that the touch sends.
