Acoustic players

I'm getting into the acoustic stuff and am looking for 4 or 5 artists to listen to. I tend to like a fairly clean sound, not necessarily a virtuoso. Maybe some solo music. Can anyone give me a list of players to check out/study?

Thanks.

Hi Pete,

Do you prefer fingerstyle or flatpicking players?

petemeister,
TOMMY EMMANUEL and MICHAEL FIX are the two best acoustic guitarists in Australia, Tommy's stuff is particularly good and exciting.

My good friend Mike Smith sent me some Tommy and Phil Emmanuel, along with some John Butler Trio, great tunes from down under, all of them...

..not all acoustic tunes, but man, very impressive!

When I think acoustic playing, it's Robert Johnson, and Reverend Gary Davis on a twelve string is hauntingly beautiful, Mance Lipsomb, Big Bill Broonzy(sweet!,) the delta blues guys...

Good day, Dave.....

I'll third the recommedation for Tommy Emmanuel, definitely one of the most exciting and inspiring musicians out there. I'd also recommend Pete Huttlinger, Michael Hedges, and the acoustic work of some "Electric" players like Steve Morse, Steve Howe, and Pat Metheny. Also, Adrian Legg, Doyle Dikes and Chris Proctor. There are many others as well.

Darren mentioned Pat Metheny who is one heck of a guitar player. If you're looking for plaintive solo acoustic playing it's hard to beat his album 'One Quiet Night'. Just Pat on a solo baritone guitar. No overdubs. Great stuff.

Lots of good names above. To the list I would add Leo Kottke. Brilliant fingerstyle player.

Don Ross ( Canadian-if you never heard him you should. My personal favorite )

Leo Kottke, Alex Degrassi, Adrian Legg, Billy Mclaughlin, Andrew York (Classical but check out his composition "SunBurst"), and WholeNote's very own Rick Payman ( I've never heard him play but his compositions are wonderful).

Those are a few of my favorites, Pete. I have a few compositions myself but I havent got around to recording them yet.
