Willie's AAT for December

I spoke to Bob K. this afternoon/evening over the phone, and he has convinced me to post this one for you all to have a go, so let's see some of you big boys give me your best shots!

It's called "Father to Son". It's played at 75 BPM, and is mostly in F (though I have yet to master writing in keys).

I'll give this a go tonight. Seems like a mood envoking piece so I'll use an approach that enhances the affect. Should be fun. I can just imagine what Kirk might do over this... Slide work would be fantastic. What do you think Kirk?

I did have a particular emotion or feeling that I tried to convey. There is a link for lyrics/story there where you download the tune. I think it sums up what I was feeling when I wrote the tune.

What I think will be interesting is the way the interpretation of others will fall in line with the guitar part towards the end of the tune. I think it will be fluid, I think no matter how YOU personally interpret it, it will coincide with what James had in mind. It'll all fall in line...

...yeah, I'd like to hear Kirk's ideas. He never seems to have bad ones. God bless him for that.

No, certainly not. I think Kirk rides on good vibes, this one has that. I would love to hear his take on it, that's all. Norman Feaster came to mind as well, I love his playing.

Thanks Willie,

I was just using a Pod Pro direct. I never play my amp at home so I usually just work with headphones and the Pod as a practice amp. My favorite thing to do is to put on CDs and play along on the computer. The Pod has good enough tone to work with and it emulates pretty closely the attack and compression I get out of the tube amp, though not the tone, so it is a good way for me to keep my practicing up.

I enjoyed the track. I cut it short at the end because I blurted out a bunch of nonsense that got cut out at the end. LOL The take was reasonable enough to post so I kept it.

Nice job, Jim. I love the nice easy feel you give this. And I think the neck pickup type-tone you gave this is appropriate. What I like the most is that you lay back in the beginning, but then continue the theme you began and really start to tell the entire story during the latter part of the song.

Listening back on it I seemed to be able to keep the energy fluid for the 4+ minutes. That's quite a bit longer than I would ordinarily like to solo but a good exercise in keeping a theme going.

I actually like to do very compressed 8 or 16 bar solos where you have to make a statement in a shorter period of time. Strunk and White comes to mind here, make ideas as concise as possible.

The neck pickup on the Paul was used! I've been playing almost exclusively with the other pickup with the band work and really wanted to hear the fuller sound on this. I wish I could find the time get a better sound out of the Pod. It works well enough but not as good as I'd like at this point. Maybe Santa will bring me more gear this Christmas... Maybe there will be something amongst the sweaters and socks this year???? (wishful but futile thinkning! LOL)

Yah, that seems to be more of my cup of tea, too. But you're right, this is a great exercise. This makes me wish I was set up and ready to go right now. Oh well, that time's coming soon enough. This is one of the tracks I'll be looking for.

Have fun with the Pod!

Hey Jim, I agree with you on the length of AAT's being short. This song was not originally meant for the AAT go getters, but I wanted to hear what you all might do in certain areas of the tune.

I'm happy that you found the time to have a go at the epic AAT! LOL! Thanks again!

This is indeeed a great backing and the change ups are a challenge. I gave it a go on the one day I had off this week but didn't like the out come, so this thing ain't over yet. LOL

Keep 'em comin' !!
