Seem like I saw an article on this board somewhere on how to register a name. You do that with the government in Washington DC (I beleive) and if no one else has registered it, it's yours. Then even if someone else is using that name they cannot use it for published recordings as you own it. I know there is more to it and it's more complicated than that, but I have been unable to locate the article with all the information. Maybe it was over on harmony-central.com

Dear Rob. I understand where you're comming from, and it's hard enough to find a band name, without the drag of finding out if someone else is using the same one. In my personal experience it has shown that, as long as you don't cash in on someone elses fame, there will be no legal trouble in your path. Now, what does this mean ?
When you decide on a band name there are two options 1) you register the name right away and acquier all rights and privileges to it, if someone else is using it you'll know pretty quickly 'cause you wont be registered 2) you don't register and use the name. In case 2, you'll be getting a letter asking you kindly to stop using that speciffic name if there is a band with the same name. Consult with someone who knows the law in your country before going through with anyting. I know the situation in Belgium, not in the entire world.

P.S.: Let it be obvious that you can't use the name of a very popular band, because in that case the assumption will be made that you are trying to cash in on their succes.

Perhaps "Courageous" "Captain Courageous" this was a title of a movie. Or perhaps letters like AAAAA band or some other sequence. How about a "10". Good luck.

I wrote a little composition titled "Make My Day". It wasn't the "movie" type of thought, but rather how a person gave some "light", "care", and "empathy" to another person.
