in my mind, since I haven't really heard any satch or vai, I can safely say that the fastest guitarists I've ever heard are

Yngwie Malmsteen
Marty Friedman
Jason Becker
and perhaps Chris Poland

know anyone else?

Ryan,

In terms of speed I'll go with....

Tony MacAlpine
Greg Howe
Paul Gilbert
Yngwie Malmsteen
Ritchie Kotzen

In terms of more melodic shredders I'll go with...

Shawn Lane
Eric Johnson
Allan Holdsworth
Mike Stern
John Scofield
Al Di Meola
John Petrucci
Steve Morse
Pat Metheny
Joe Satriani

That's just a couple, but a pretty good list...to me anyway.

Hi Everyone

I think that speed is partly due to choice of notes, and I personally find that listening to notes played with large intervallic jumps between them sound faster than chromatics sometimes.

I've heard Steve Vai play licks with large interval jumps between the notes and they sound really gnarly.

Personally I find the guitar playing of John Petrucci of Dream Theater to be the most pumping of the "fast" guitar players, especially his improvised solo with the Dream Theater band in the live track "Bombay Vindaloo", from their Live at the Marquee album.

Cheers

There are many extremely fast players out there who are even faster than the Malmsteen's of this world. Most of them are unknown --- and the reason that they are unknown is because they totally suck, other than being able to play fast. Some guys who dont suck and can play fast are:

Marco Paus
Joe Stump
Malmsteen
Becker
Friedman
Impitrelli
Gilbert
Rusty Cooley

If you haven't heard of DragonForce, try them out. I don't know the names of their guitarists but they both rule IMO.

I can play faster than any of those guys...mind you it's not very accurate and it sounds kinda like a cassette getting caught in the tape player.

Errrr excuse me?

Thats something very odd here.....no one has mentioned a certain Mr. NUNO Bettencourt, uber guitar god extraordinaire, who used to play in that extreme band...you know...extreme, good band.

If you dont think he's fast listen to "He-Man Woman Hater" (no thats not a machince playing guitar at the start, its Nuno)

I haven't heard anyone mention Michael Angelo. He was voted "#1 shredder of all time" in guitar one magazine. However, I prefer more classical such as Yngwie Malmsteen or Cacophony (Jason Becker and Marty Friedman).

Plenty mentioned Michael Angelo I think.

Everyone here should check out "Frenzy" by Racer-X, the band Paul Gilbert used to be in, thats speed for the sake of speed somewhat I think, but still check it out if you want to hear fast.
