Dream Theater / Yes

In August and September, Dream Theater is going on tour with Yes. Obviously, Yes is the headlining band, but isn't that disappointing to some people. I mean, Dream Theater is gonna outplay them in every aspect: loudness, musicality, perfection, etc... Why on earth combine these two bands? and does anyone else feel the way I do about it?

"Yes" is one of the most amazing bands of all time. Dream Theater is good, but comparing their musicianship to that of Yes'? I suppose if it's your thing.

I think that Yes was one of the most amazing bands in the world.

For years Steve Howe, Chris Squire and Bill Bruford set standards for many musicians all through the 70's.
Chris Squire was the first musician to knock Paul McCartney off the Guitar Player Bassist of the Year chart.
They were the premier "prog" group of the 70's.

Hi Steven,

Why on Earth combine these bands?...Well, here's how I see it:

You have to understand something....If it weren't for YES, there probably wouldn't be bands like Dream Theatre, Symphony-X, Planet-X, Stratovarius, and all the other prog-metal bands out there....

YES is possibly one of the first major progressive rock bands, along with FOCUS, and ELP...Bands like this basically influenced the ENTIRE prog-metal scene we know today!

It's obvious to me why Dream Theatre would be playing with YES.

Now, I do like Dream Theatre, to some extent....and yeah, I think Petrucci is a damn good player, and I think the rest of the band is incredibly talented, too.

And SURE, John Petrucci is a guitar-virtuoso, and can play scales at a whopping 3000 MPH, and YEAH, Dream Theatre might be technical geniuses, BUT, Steve Howe (along with the rest of YES members) did some incredible playing themselves! And Steve was quite the fretboard whiz himself, back in the day.

Listen to damn near ANY Yes song, and give a good listen......"Tempus Fugit", "Yours is no Disgrace"...etc etc....You'll immediately HEAR the influences!

Anyway, just my view on this topic!

Take care!
Chris

I completely agree that Yes probably started it all, but I think that prog rock has changed a lot since Yes, and Dream Theater are now the gods. I mean, you have to give credit to Yes, and they are great, but I think Dream Theater is too good to be an opening band. It's just disappointing for me, because I've been waiting forever to see a Dream Theater show (never been to one), and 45 minutes to an hour of opening just isn't the same as a monster four hour Dream Theater show. If i do go to see Yes and Dream Theater, it's ONLY to see Dream Theater.

Steven,
I agree. Yes is a great band. But Dream Theater is just amazing. I would love to see them at a headlining show. The technicallity and creativeness that Dream Theater produces is so amazing. And in my opinion they are more of a progressive metal instead of rock. But anyway you should check out there DVD from "Scenes from a Memory". Just a small example of what they would seem like live, it's a great DVD.
