Check out the boss FZ-3 fuzz pedal for some hendrix sounds. It also works as a good compression unit. I have one and i love it. For about $60-75 you can't go wrong.

The 2 distortion pedals I like best are the Boss Blues Driver (BD-2) and the Ibanez Sonic Distortion, now made by Maxon. Very different pedals, but either would suite the style you describe. You can also try the Boss OD-20 gives you multiple distortion/overdrive options through its COSM modeling. It's more pricy ($179), but gives you the most versatility.

i've tried 6 pedals in a guitar shop from various manufacturers & chose the Marshall guv'nor 2 pedal. it has plenty of growl & if you turn the distortion back a bit it gives a nice warm bluesy overdrive sound. also offers nice tone adjustments if you like the heavy thick tone. $78.00

Hi Tom, does the Guv 2 eat batteries like crazy that somebody mentioned earlier? I have an old Rat and ts9: about the Rat if you turn up dist past 11 oclock it turns to fuzz...about the ts9 not enough gain. However the Rat is great to drive an old Fender amp long as you dont turn up dist. let me know about the Guv2...Thanx

maybe you sould try Boss DS-1 at a low level of distortion. the advantage is that you can distort the sound more if you want (to get a sound like satriani)
or try to you the overdrive of your amp (if it has one) cause' those things sound more like hendrix etc.... i do it on my marshall valvestate!

Call me old fashioned, but i like the old analog pedals and things, like a FuzzFace. New those things are like $100 but if you looked around in pawn shops, you could probably find one or something like it for $50 or so.

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but if your looking for just a distortion pedal, check out the Boss DS-1..they go for around $40 and you can't get much more classic then that :-) I also agree with the Digitech RP series..I've got one of the RP-50's and its really a great pedal...although given the chance to do it over again, I'd go with the RP100 instead due to the increase in setting flexability.

Also, if you can find one, ya might want to look for a used "Ross Distortion"...I do mostly classic rock/blues stuff to and I use that pedal -a lot-. I don't think they've made them for many years, but I've seen them used in stores for around $70. Their really simple to use and have a really good tone. Lastly if your really into the Hendrix type tone, ya might want to take a look at the Electro-Harmonix "Big Muff" reissues. Not sure how much they go for now a days, but they are very authentic sounding indeed.

Good Luck,
Jim

I think you should test the boss DS-1. Versatile pedal and the tone is very nice, good presence. Besides, the price is very good, imho. A classic distortion pedal.
Marshall pedals are very good. The new digitech X-series pedals are nice too. But I really like the DS-1.

I remember using a Marshall pedal through a solid state Gibson amp. I was startled how good it sounded. Basically gave a country twang type amp a real touch of Marshall. Still remember how surprised I was. Had I planned on keeping that amp as my main, I would have picked one up.

Funny, I traded it for a Crash Ride symbol.
