Yup, Tom-
Em is definitely simple, sad yet beautiful! In case you didn't notice, the chord I started the discussion with is a form of Em. Someone help- is it Em2?

I'd call it an Em9 or Em7(9). You've got E, G, B, D which is an Em7, and I'd call the F# on the 4th string a 9 (instead of a 2) because the chord contains a D on the 2nd string, which is the b7 of the chord.

The interesting thing is that one of my favorite chords is kind of an inversion of your chord:

Em9

... combine open strings with closed ones up the neck. you can get structures with a lot of small intervals.

Well, from lowest string to highest, you've got C, G, Ab, and Eb, so I'd call it an Ab major 7 (Ab,C,Eb,G)

Thanks, Chris. Now, of course, it makes perfect sense. I still don't have all the theory behind these extended chords quite down yet. If asked, I can usually name the notes in a given chord, but for some reason when I'm trying to figure out the name of a particular chord shape (like in this instance) and there is some type of inversion involved, it seems especially difficult for me.

Hi Karen,

They're not always obvious on the fingerboard. The thing that helped me was to write out 4 note voicings for all the basic 7th chords (i.e. maj7, min7, 7, m7b5, etc.) in each of the 4 inversions, and just start playing them along with a metronome. After a while they become second nature, and you absorb the theory into your playing.

But that was when I had a lot more free time... ;-)

Have you ever listened to Wayne Krantz? If not check out monsta.com. As far as I can tell, he is the undisputed master of open-stringed voicings. He's written many tunes based around the use of open strings...
