The long answer is that the "root" chord could be any chord built from the D Dorian scale.
Dorian is 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7, so you could use
D5 (1 5)
Dm (1 b3 5)
Dsus2 (1 2 5)
Dsus4 (1 4 5)
Dm6 (1 b3 5 6)
Dm6/9 (1 b3 5 6 9)
Dmadd9 (1 b3 5 9)
Dm7 (1 b3 5 b7)
D7sus (1 4 5 b7)
Dm9 (1 b3 5 b7 9)
Dm11 (1 b3 5 b7 9 11)
Dm13 (1 b3 5 b7 9 11 13) etc...
You could also make up a riff out of the scale that resolves to the D note... you don't have to use chords.
