Who's playing the Blues?

I know lots of good old Blues guitarists from the past but now I was interested in discovering some more of the present day. So who's actually playing the blues nowadays? Anything worth listen to? I prefer if you tell me solo artists rather than bands... Always watched the blues as a solo style...

Let's see, there's Kenny Wayne Shepherd (heavily influenced by SRV and Hendrix), Tommy Castro (a little funkier, definitely still blues though), Joe Bonamassa (sounds like SRV, Jethro Tull, and Eric Johnson combined), Indigenous (I don't care if you only want solo artists, this band is DEFINITELY worth a listen or five), JD Simo (SRV and Hendrix with some speed playing), Eric Sardinas (lots of good, raw slide guitar playing), and BB King is also still going (his guitar playing has taken a bit of a back seat with his age, but his voice is still as soulful and bluesy as ever).

For the newer Blues I would definetly endorse Bonamassa and Sardinas, it's in very good hands with these two.

KWS - heavily influenced by SRV ? How about a "clone". The kid needs to come up with some original riffs before I'll buy his stuff.
Gary Moore - rock/blues and Robben Ford - Jazz/blues are still around and well worth a listen.

Look at it this way. KWS is making music similar enough to SRV's that he is often called a "clone." But he's not playing the exact same songs (except for some covers). If SRV were still alive, he'd be making music in his style, but not the same songs he make before. But no one would bash SRV for being a clone of his former self. I'm not saying that KWS is a substitute for SRV, he's not. I'm saying that it's still damn good music, whether it's original or not. There are plenty of things in music, blues especially that aren't original at all. Nobody minds when a blues player plays over the same old blues progression.

Joe, I agree but KWS is playing the exact same lead riffs as SRV - note for note.

Robert...I read somewhere KWS met SRV when he was but a lad..and this chance meeting is what inspired Kenny to become a guitar player. Personally KWS would impress me more if he sang!! Honestly speaking...Doing both of them live is a very rough thing to do!!

Who's playing the Blues?? Me!! I have been playing them for years, and I highly recommend any serious guitarist to delve into the aspects of that style of playing!! Metalheads, Shredders, Chicken Pickers are all great...But when you can spice your playing with a little blues on the side...I think you become a wicked player!! Just my opinion......Randy E

A band you should really check out is the North Mississippi Allstars. Especially the first album, Shake Hands with Shorty.

Hi Clay
Did you see the Tribute to SRV that Jimmy Vaughn hosted? He had all the greats on there, BB, BUddy Guy, Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, etc. Now don't get me wrong, Jimmy can probably play circles around me, but on that show he was really out of his league and it showed.

I like his(JV) style. He calls it gulf coast blues. I can relate to that living down here. I like Texas Blues. And he typlifies that sound. Man, I love the blues, doesn't really matter who playing it.

Hi again Clay
Sorry , it looked like I was slamming Jimmy and didn't mean for it to be that way. Just was stating that even though he has a good sound, in the company he was in on the vid ,he was a little behind.
Happy playing I love the blues too, almost anybody playing

I remember us talking about this before. Reminds me to pop in the vid and take a look again. I really like Jimmy's studio work and the work with his bands, but I'm with you about Jimmy being out of that particular league.

Stevie Ray was once quoted speaking about his brother: "...I play

plays about 10 percent."

Jimmie Vaughan is kind of a blues pursit. He's very minimalist in his
approach; he's much more intent on catching the early blues sound
of the early chess records releases. He wants to sound like Muddy
Waters or Jimmie Rodgers, not Jimi Hendrix. But if you read SRV's
biography you hear Stevie say that Jimmie Vaughan might play
Hendrix stuff better than he does. he just doesn't want to.
