First off are you on an acoustic or electric? What is your favorite type of music? What players make you jealous? Answer those 3 questions and I'll respond back quickly.

"at this moment"...are you saving for an electric?

Anyways that is an interesting mix of music...
I agree with the poster that follows this. There are basics one can learn regardless of your personal tastes and he did a pretty good job of listing them.

As for proper picking technique...a GREAT exercise that is good for picking coordination AND building strength in your fingering hand is this....

First string (low e)1,2,3,4 (1st finger on 1st fret, 2nd finger on second fret, 3rd finger on third finger on third fret, pinky on 4th fret. One finger to each fret. Alternate pick (up and down) each note. Maintain an even tempo. Use a metronome at a low speed and play so every other note lands on a "click". Below is a partial exaqmple. go in this pattern from 1,2,3,4, up to 9,10,11,12. When you get stronger do that 1,2,3,4 -----> 9,10,11,12 AND ------>back to 1,2,3,4.
repeat pattern

FYI the computer would only let me fill in the first 64 notes in the exercise. It is a consistant pattern of playing EVERY fret.

Diego, yes we need to know what you're playing (guitar wise), and what kind of music you like, but here are a few ideas anyway:

Practice learning the basic chords (E, A, C, G, D, Bm, Em, Am, F, Bb, Dm) work on memorizing these chords, and then smoothly changing between different ones.

Learn to play in time by that I mean get your rhythm down so that if you are playing a song that gets four beats per measure, that's how many strums you do per measure---at an even tempo.

Work on memorizing where the notes are on the fretboard You can do this be memorizing the notes of each string through the first five frets, then later on, working on memorizing more.

make sure your hands are in proper playing position

Practice picking techniques

These are just a few suggestions, and many of them have lessons available under the lesson section of this site. Good luck.

I consider myself a beginner also (10 months) and I just bought a copy of "Fretboard logic". I have only read through the first several pages and I am very excited about the contents. Read some of the revies on it here and think about getting it. It covers the CAGED principle and makes everything make sense.

Well...I'll assume you can play some simple songs or something. Learn some cool solos, practice chords a lot to build finger strength and calaises(very good idea).

Get a good practice routine! 10 minutes: 1 minutes stretching fingers, 3 minutes playing chords, 3 minutes playing a few solos, then for the remainding 3 minutes...play anything! have fun the last 3 minutes :). Hope I helped a little bit...

Hi diego,

When trying to learn the notes ,it helps if you put adhesive stickers with the note names written onto them, onto the frets.

I suggest putting fretstickers at the 5th,7th,9th and 12th frets,it really helps.

Goodbye comrade.
