improving guitar playing

I am a beginner and have can play simple arpeggios and am learning a simple version of Amazing Grace from sheet music. What are some good selections are lessons to improve my fingerpicking and my site reading?

For fingerpicking, do you refer to the style played by Merle Travis and Chet Atkins with alternate bass?
If so, one of the first things to learn is how to keep a alternate bass line while changing chords. I don't remember any lesson on that, but it takes some pratice until it becomes a second nature.
