I'm going to do something horrible and make an assumption about you based upon this message. Forgive me if you can...

You wait a little more than an hour and express frustration over not receiving any replies to your original request. And you practice, practice, practice at a fervent pace. But for how long? I'm guessing you need -- in the words of the immortal Axl Rose -- a little patience.

How long have you been at the guitar? If you've been practicing for less than a year, you're a long way off from giving those six good guitarists a run for their money. Even with practice, it takes time to learn and master this fickle instrument.

My personal advice (aren't you glad you asked?) is to forget about being the best and just concentrate on being a musician who makes music to please yourself and those who listen to you.

I realize that competitiveness can be a good thing, and head-cutting goes back all the way to the invention of the instrument. But all that stuff can also get in the way of enjoying guitar-playing and making music. Especially if you don't happen to be the most gifted guy on the block. It can get discouraging real quick (take it from the least gifted guy on my block).

Anyway, do you want to know what you should do? Settle down and play for fun. Keep practicing. Find others to play with. Make music. While you're doing all that stuff, you'll discover that your playing will greatly improve. And you'll find that those six guys (and girls) will be playing with you, instead of against you.

Just my idyllic $0.02...

I think you probably need to play with others. I think most of the folks around here who have played in bands will agree that their playing improved the most on the bandstand. Of course you may need some specific advice to overcome some particular problem, but we don't know what that would be so we can't really address it directly.

What do you feel is wrong?

well i pretty much switched from bass so using all my fingers on the same brainwave isn't it.... i think it's my chord changes and my speed change on different fingerings..... their too slow and i feel dumb having to stare at the fretboard .... i just want to get better at a quicker rate.. i know i can play better than i am now i just don't know whats holding me back???

I don't know how long you've been playing so I'll take a guess that you are having to think where you will place your fingers for the next chord and then you stumble on the change?

All guitarists have had this happen when learning. The way I got thru was to slow everything down to where I could do the changes cleanly and after I was happy with my progress I would then take it up a notch until I could play at the correct tempo.

A part of it is 'muscle memory'. You are teaching your hand muscles to perform new tasks.

And don't forget, there is 'practice' and 'correct practice'

Mark.

Find a guitarist in town and then both of you realize that us all musicians go through this stuff man! If you ever feel like you're getting nowhere with something, then you probably are! Get what you want out of your playing.
You say you want to be Randy Rhodes good?
Sit down and anylize his stuff. Figure out what he's doing, it will give you a good ear too.
If you want to pick as fast as Randy Rhodes, then get a metronome and Flying Fingers and learn to play as fast as you want. But most out of all of this stuff, it sounds like you aren't trying hard enough to get as good as them, keep practicing like you do, but make a schedule of what you're doing. As that I mean, "I will practice on my tapping for half an hour everyday", or whatever. Or, "I will practice my improvsing for a hour" everyday.
It helps me to keep a constant schedule, that way you can look at what you are doing and decide if you should practice more on the subject, or learn something new...
Good luck my friend.
If you have any ?'s

Speaking as another relative necomer, it sounds like you're putting too much pressure on yourself. You've been going at it for 3 weeks! Calm down and enjoy each little bit of progress, keep up the practice and just have fun. If it were possible to pick up a guitar and play like Randy Rhodes after 3 weeks (I s'pose it's been done), then everybody would be doing this. No, it takes time, persistance, and above all - patience...

Good Luck and happy picking!
