Perhaps the comparisions should be made in reference to the guitarist's greatest moments in a particular time period. As parents we try to treat each of our children in an equal fashion and manner. A child age 4 live in one time period and the sibling when age 4, does not live in the same time period as all sorts of changes have taken place It probably would have more meaning if a particular year and style of playing, was the criteria, as to who was the greatest at that exact time. The fortunate thing we all need to remember is that we lived when they became what they are. Each has their own greatness. Treat that for what it is worth. We all have our likes and preferances in everything, and no less than the guitarists Lionel Hampton died today so how do we compare him? For his time and period there will never be a replacement. For those of you who have heard him, it was a moment in time to remember and so it should be for all those whom you have come to admire and appreciate in music, living or past. There will be more greats along the way. Appreciate what you have in your memories. Each guitarist mentioned on this post has greatness in their own way. Charlie |

Charlie:
Lionel Hampton had played with Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker and just a few of the greats that came out of his band were Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon and Fats Navarro. He was a towering figure in the jazz world. You're right when you say we're lucky to have lived at the same time as some of these musical giants.

Thats a great way of looking at things. I hope thats what most of us are doing (the greatest moment of a players history)
You can't compare Jimmy Page's playing today to what he did in the late 60s and early 70s
