Who's the captain?

Just stopped up for once to listen to the lyrics of Hotel California. I always thought that it was a sweet song about someone driving in the desert.

As I heard the lyrics I thought it was complete rubbish at first. But then it stroke me that he was singing about drugs. "...stab it with their steely knives..." and so on.

I figured that the twisted girl must be the dealer, but I still wonder...

Mikkel in the U.S. They have captains in all avenues of employment.
I.e Bell captains at hotels, sky captains at terminals. etc
Where you live they may be section managers or whatever you call that type of position in your country.
In this reference " So I called up the captain, please bring me my wine,"
Put two and two together, he's in a hotel and more than likely called the "(bell) captain" for room service.

I agree that its a bell capitan in the song and "wine" in the bible is a type(representation) for the Holy Spirit.

I'll go with the explanation that it must be a bell captain, rather than the satanic interpretation. The song leads to the song still give me goose bumps, especially on the "Hell Freezes Over" album. I suppose we should ask Henley or Frye who the Captain was.

I always heard and thought(to some degree) that it was about a prison. In which case, the captain would be a warden of some sort...?

Do musicians have too much time on their collective hands? Man, I can't believe all of the arcane information there is on this site!

The interpretation I heard about was the same thing Tyler's on to.

It was written about the music industry and contractual obligations. 'You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave' is a reference to how once the labels hook you, your hooked. Whether your good enough to get a 5 album deal or whether they boot you out after one. If your good enough, the labels will keep you on the leash by seeing to it that you never recoup from advances. If your kicked out after one, you're black listed. Other labels wouldn't be interested although no one will officially tell you that, of course. And of course you're already addicted and need to keep seeking a new deal. 'We are all just prisoners here of our own device'.

So the hotel is the recording industry. The captain is like the A&R guy at the label.

Who knows?? All kinds of stories float around about stuff.

Steve
