Hey Guys. I'm always looking to expand my collection of recordings of acoustic/electric guitar soloists.I'm looking for some names to look into. Some of my favorites are: Adrian Legg, Chet, Al DiMiola, Jerry Donahue. These type of artists are some of the genra/variety that I like. Gimme some more names................Brett Thanks

Straight up, I have no idea of the artist you mentioned. Maybe I need to expand my musical base, or maybe I've never been exposed...

perosonally, if we are talking acoustic (which is my love) and you allow me rock/pop/folk ---
I love the Indigo Girls, Nick Drake, Ani, Days of the New, oh, I really like a lot - you really should check out Drake though, very mellow, very beautiful, VERY DIFFICULT:)

I heard a lot of great things about Richard Thompson, and my friend Greg Battle turned me on to this disc by Don Ross. He posted a review in the Resources section: Recordings->Acoustic

Yes Nick Drake and Richard Thompson are both great. Richard played on most of Nick's records. Richard's stuff with Fairport Convention is very good also. Also Leo Kottke is incredible. And ol' James Taylor is a pretty good picker as well.

I saw Richard Thompson recently on TV on a Joni Mitchell tribute, and his playing was just marvelous, in this droning, Celtic sort of style that fit the Mitchell cover perfectly (I forget which tune).

He just has "it", that intangible quality to his playing that makes you realize what a special player he is...

Richard played "Woodstock" on acoustic and "Black Crow" on Strat. Both were great. I've seen him live and he has a tendency to over-solo. But he's got a terrific sound. A little like Mark Knofler but with more fire.
(BTW Chris- after seeing you recommend Mike Stern, I picked up his new CD "Play" last week. Very nice. Thanks for the tip.)

Good to hear, Ray.

The thing about Mike is that it's all about the music, and growing as a musician. He is known for his diligent attitude toward practicing, and his incredible humility. He still plays most Mondays and Wednesdays in this tiny little dive in the West Village in NYC, because he needs a continual outlet to improve his playing and musicianship. If you're ever in NYC, check the 55 Bar on Christopher St. and see if he's playing.

Otherwise, he usually makes it to the Regattabar or whatever the new jazz clubs are in Boston at least once a year...

I'll check him out the next time he's in town. That's one of the great things about Boston (and NY too)-there's always great live music of all different styles here.

Richard played "Woodstock." He was phenomenal! Ashley Judd introduced him and called him amazing. No other performer that evening was introduced with such passion. Richard Thompson rules!! He heads my list of guitarists -- listen to him and you will forget your complete list of guitar "gods." Although I like Neil Young's songwriting more than Richard, I love Richard's playing. Check out his double CD, one side electric, the other acoustic -- just amazing.
