Lessons: Visual Overview of Lesson Authoring

Here is a walkthrough of how you make lessons, with screenshots. You may also be interested in our Lesson Authoring FAQ and our Lesson Guide. If you still have questions, try posting it to the FretBuzz forum about WholeNote.

1. Making Some Music
2. Creating The Lesson
3. The Lesson Builder
4. The Page Builder

1. Making Some Music
You can point and click to create guitar parts and backing tracks. Make sure you're logged in to WholeNote, and then:

• Use the Composer to create guitar sequences or licks
• Use the Groove Builder to create backing tracks

Each sequence and groove that you make are listed in your My Music page. You can then combine these to form the musical examples in your lessons. In your lesson, sequences and licks are shown as tablature. Grooves are shown as chord charts.

2. Creating The Lesson
A lesson can be about anything and can have as many pages as you like. Show us a cool lick that you know or show how you practice your scales or rhythm playing. To help categorize your lesson, we ask for some basic info before you start editing the lesson pages. To create a new lesson:

• Select My Music->New Lesson to enter the header information for your new lesson.

• After you create the header, you will be taken to the Lesson Builder with Page 1 already created with default values.

3. The Lesson Builder
The Lesson Builder shows you the status of all pages in the lesson. It's the launching point for creating new pages or editing existing lesson pages, and to edit any of the lesson's header information.

The Lesson Builder

• To edit the header, click on "Edit Its Header Information".
• To create a page, click on "Create Page 2" (or whatever the new page number is).
• To edit a page, click on the "Edit" link associated with that page.
• To view a page, click on the "View" link associated with that page.

4. The Page Builder
Use the Page Builder to specify your musical examples and lesson text. Each lesson page can contain up to 2 guitar sequences, and one groove. Set the tempo of your example. You can also choose a subset of measures for any of these pieces of music.

The Page Builder

• To choose a main music sequence, select it from your Composer sequences in the Sequence 1 menu. You should also specify the measures to include from this sequence.
• To choose a 2nd music sequence, select it from your Composer sequences in the Sequence 2 menu. You should also specify the measures to include from this sequence.
• To choose a groove, select it from your grooves in the Groove menu. You should also specify the measures to include from this groove.
• To specify you lesson text, simply enter it in the Lesson Text field. Use HTML if you like.
• To change the tempo, select the desired tempo from the Tempo menu.
• The First Displayed Measure Number can be used to start your tablature measure numbers at a value other than 1.
• To play the musical example, first click the "Save Page" button, and then "Play Page".
• To save the lesson page, click the "Save Page" button.
• To view the lesson page, click the "View Page" button. This will also save it.
• To delete the page, click on the "Delete" button.

When you return to the Lesson Builder, the sample page above will appear as follows:

The Page Builder

• To listen to the page, click on the speaker icon next to the page number.
• To listen to a lesson sequence or groove, click on the speaker icon next its name.
• To edit a lesson sequence or groove, click on its name.
