This exercise is used to help people get used to stretching their fingers, this will make your fingers stronger, and the stronger your fingers are the more accurate your playing technique will be. Start very slow with this exercise, around 80 bpm (may be a tad bit slow for intermediate/advanced players, but trying to focus on the beginners here) and work your speed up as you did with the previous lessons. The asending verison of this exercise is the exact same pattern all the way up, but the desending verison comes back down by string skipping, I recommend alternate picking, and legato for this piece.
