Here are the first two measures of Doc Watson's Deep River Blues. This can be a very impressive piece when you get it going. If you're not used to playing Travis style bass lines you may want to practice on some easier pieces until you get the hang of it. The thumb plays the sixth and fourth strings, and the fingers play the rest. Use your index finger for the third string, your middle finger for the second string, and your ring finger for the first string. Just repeat the pattern for a while until you really get this part strong, then move on to page 2. Hold the chord shape through the entire measure.
