Aight.. say ur playing a simple chord progressiopn such as wild thing (E,A,B) Well wot i normally do when improvising is: after i play the chord progression about 4 times quikly whip out a short riff that is basically the following:

After playing this small riff i go back to the main chord progression again and repeat it another time. I then play another riff that is basically like this sequence already shown but a bit different as it is improvised...

I continue to do this another two or so times so the structure would look like this:

Chord progression x4

Riff

Chord Progression x 1

Riff

Chord Prog.. x 1

Riff

Chord Prog.. x 1

Riff

then continue the improvised song as normal.

Every Now And then i use this very basic riff aswell.. (but with wah effects and added improvisation)

This is very basic but I Hope this has helped you in any way as to improvising short riffs or anything else... MoRrY
