All guitarist should be versatile and should have a solid rhythm foundation. I suggest listening to all types of music. Listen to R&B, Funk, Hip Hop, and Electronic music. Timing and rhythm can be developed by praticing with a metronome or a drum machine. Some guitarist place too much emphasis on lead and soloing ideas forgetting that in most live and jamming situations the guitarist will play mostly rhythm. If we're lucky we may get the opportunity to even solo. This example is taken from tbe song "Video" by R&B artist India Arie. I utilize the "Clawhammer" technique to perform this chord Progression. The bass note is played with my thumb on my right hand. My 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers play the top strings. The accents are on the up beats. I use this right hand technique along with others in my own playing.
