Using Hammer-Ons with Power Chords
Another technique that rock and metal guitarists use with power chords is the hammer-on. If you're not familiar with hammer-ons, you might want to check out our Getting a Grip on Hammers and Pulls lesson. In the case of the power chord, you can barre with your left-hand first finger and perform the hammer with your ring finger.

Look at the example below. In measures 1-4, we slowly introduce the timing of the hammer-on, as it gets faster and faster. Then, in measures 5-8, we see a typical use of the hammer-on in a Black Sabbath type of lick....
