How To Practice Scales

All of these scales are useless unless you have something to do with them. The best way to learn the form of a scale is to play it at the first fret from the sixth string to the first string and back to the sixth string, modulate the scale by one half-step, or one fret, and play it again. Keep going until you reach the highest fret on your guitar. It will get awkward at the higher frets at first. If you feel pain, stop. Eventually, you should play your scales smoothly and briskly at all fret locations.

The best way to learn how to use these scales is to practice using them against a 12-bar blues progression. The standard 12-bar blues progression in the key of A would have 4 measures of A, 2 measures of D, 2 measures of A, 1 measure of E, 1 measure of D, 1 measure of A, 1 measure of E.
