Put Some Funk in Your Riffs
OK, so here's exercise #1. The main rhythmic figure is a 1-bar pattern in which we hit the low E on the 1st 8th note and the fourth 8th note. I've also put a rhythmic chuck on the third 8th note for more percussiveness. After that, we play a top note that we'll either hold or embellish. Mmms. 1-2 hold a top E, mms. 3-4 feature a hammer-on into the E, mms. 5-6 use a pull-off from the top E to the open D, and mms. 7-8 use a double pull-off.
Try substituting different notes and embellishments for the top E. Some good choices are F, G, A, Bb, and D.
