First, let's start with the position of the Thumb.
I find it best to get the Wes Tone by placing your thumb on the string(s) that you want to play and with the fatty, boney part, push down to get a great thick sounding round sound. This works great with people whom play classical guitar (like me) so that they don't hit the string with their thumbnail and get a "pick" sound.
For those of you whom don't have a thumbnail, you can use more of the pad, which, I believe is what Wes would have done. Also, you might have noticed that in order to get really fast at playing "avec le pouce" (With the Thumb in French) you almost have to play with the pad of your thumb. So go cut those fingernails off!!! lol...
