Musical Notation and Pitch:
Music is written on a STAFF that has five lines and four spaces.
The CLEF is what determines the letter names of the lines and
spaces. The musical alphabet uses seven letters they are A-B-C-D-E-F-G.
The name of the LINES in the Treble Clef from bottom to
top are E-G-B-D-F and can be remembered in the sentence Every
Good Boy Does Fine. The letter names of the SPACES in the
treble clef from bottom to top spell the word FACE.
Notice that the letter names of all the lines and spaces put together are E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F; it just starts on E and goes up the musical alphabet.
also call the Treble Clef the G clef because it circles around
the G line. All other letter names are figured from this line.
The name of the lines in the Bass Clef from bottom to top are G-B-D-F-A and can be remembered in the sentence Great Big Dogs Fight Animals. The name of the space in the Bass Clef from bottom to top spell ACE-G. Many people also call the Bass Clef the F clef because the two dots are placed on each side of the F line. All the other letter names are figured from this line.
Leger lines are short lines placed above and below the staff. Just think of them as additional lines to the staff. When both treble and bass clefs are combined with an intervening leger line know as middle C (one ledger line below the treble clef and one leger line above the bass clef. It is called this because it is the same note written differently in each clef and it's positioned in the middle of the trebele and bass clef.) it is known as the grand staff. The line and the bracket that joins the two different staves is called a brace. Now stop and take time to do this review.
