It can be helpful to combine two or more short exercises which work on different areas of development with excerpts from the standard guitar repertoire to create a longer study, allowing the short two or four measure exercises to come alive in more musical surroundings. Creating these longer studies can also keep things interesting and can allow you to work on four or five different technical areas in a very short period of time.
